larry....motor oil is green and watery right? no? didn't think so. i did know this TO-20's block was cracked, now i have to decide what to do about it. i saw a post somewhere about a new product that CRC came out with. it's a new kind of block sealer...but i can find the post. i meant to write down the website it gave but forgot. i might try it before pulling the whole motor and taking it in. wondering now why i was so excited getting the thing into my shop!

i also have a rear axle seal leaking, and steering arms are leaking oil where they come out of the steering box. i have to find a new fan shroud too. i guess i better get the repair manual out and start studying again. maybe i should just trade her in and look for another 35? nah!

take care, mike

It is a little hard to make a decision on a rebuild for a block with a crack, I just wonder if the cracks in the block were causing the leak, or just the head leaking. I doubt the head was cracked from the head being dropped if it infact was. Dropping the head would leave some real bad dents on the edges. I have had real good success with a product Napa sells for sealing cracks in blocks it's called iron-tite. The stuff works good if you follow the directions. Stan

Have used 'Irontite' and it works for about 12 months before having to treat again. Green stuff was leaking from headgasket seam.

Hey Mike , Sounds like you need a day off to go fishing and think about what you've done now!!!! I'm in the middle of a snow storm. Having loads
of fun, can't wait to plow out. Should be sitting
below the dam at centerhill lake catching a few
fishies. A cracked block doesn't sound like much fun. Get that block fixed cause spring is just around
the corner.

hey farmer!!! we'd be gettin' pretty wet if we were fishin' center hill right now...but we'd be pretty warm. (the sauger bite should be on right now right?) it's gotta be close to 50 out. i'm not fishin' but i am sitting here listening to the rain on the roof reading this forum trying to find an easy way to fix my block, knowing there really isn't one. luckily, the 35 is running good so i don't have to worry about being tractorless this spring. truth???...the main reason for the 20 being in the shop is for a good reason to disappear down there.

i heard you're gettin' a real white out up there. lots of wind huh? you just keep it up there where it belongs and everything will be fine. stay warm and don't get drifted over as you plow.

Hey Mike,

Boy, this hasn't been a good week for either one of us. Hate to hear about the "green" oil. I remember how deflated I felt when I removed the head from my 20 and found not just one crack, but EVERY web beteen the cylinders. I almost quit before I started. I had already resigned myself to the fact that I was gonna have to replace practically all of the front and buy new tires all around. When I saw the bad block, I dropped the whole project for about two weeks.

Keep us informed if you decide to try the sealer.
If you decide to find a replacement, let me know and I will keep an eye out for one.

Now for my bad news. I went to pick up the head I had left to have rebuilt. They guy says I have bad news for you - it has a bad crack in it. I could have dealt with that a little better if he had told me that right after he cleaned it, but he had told me then that it looked very good. I am somewhat suspicious that it got dropped because we went from supposedly having it ready in two or three days, to all of a sudden a delay of two weeks - then yesterday he drops the bad news. I haven't checked the crack out yet, so I won't make any final judgements until I get a close look as to where the crack is. Even then, it won't change anything. I wouldn't have pushed the issue if he had said he damaged it. He is young, basically honest, and trying to make it on his own. he has also been very reasonable in the past on the things he has worked on for me.

In the meantime, I will be looking around for another one. Let me know if you happen to hear of one in your area.

Note: I guess neither one of us need to worry about buying any lottery tickets this week. Our luck just isn't with us this week!

Larry

larry...sorry to hear about your "cracked head" (could explain you paintin' on the mrs.'s table tho) i guess it's possible your guy didn't find the crack til he magna-fluxed it, but ya...it does sound a little suspicious. maybe i shoulda bid on that little 20 i saw at the auction after all...we might need a parts tractor?

lemme know what you find out.

No, never tried it but did look it over and it actually sounds pretty good but I'm not too much into magic cures. Hoping someone gives it a try and reports back how it works out. Are you going to be our guinea pig for the experiment? :

r....i'm giving it some serious consideration. i'm just getting over being sick right now and the thought of pullin' that engine apart again isn't sitting to well on my still stuffed up head, but i might change my mind as i get "weller". if i do end up being the "first" on here to try it i'll give everyone a full report of my findings....but i'd rather find someone else that tried it and learn that way.
