I have a Power King tractor with a 14 horse engine that has been in storage for at least 7 years. It will hit when I pour gas in the spark plug hole but won't pull gas into the carb. There is a housing on the side of the engine that appears to be a fuel pump between the tank and the carb. How do I prime the system?

I have the same tractor and engine.I don't know how long the tractor had sat before I got it running Don't touch that fuel pump until you try everthing else you can't get parts for it. Hold your hand over
the carb intake to see if you have any vacumn to suck the gas in. Pull the hose off the carb to see
if the fuel pump is working Did you check the oil to
see if it has gas in it? You are going to have to rebuild that carb. Take it off disassemble it
soak it in lacquer thinner a few days and get a kit
to replace the parts Don't worry about the jets
you probrobly can't get them out anyway. After soaking, blow everything out with an air compressor. Make sure the gas line from the tank
is not constricted. I bought a service manual for
mine off Ebay about $12 bucks I think. A good copy
Any questions, Email me.

First I would see if fuel is getting to the carb by taking off the fuel line at the carb. Crank it over and make sure the tank fuel shut off valve is open. Do appropreate things to make sure you are being safe with the fuel that comes out.
If you are getting fuel that far then go to the carb.
I would get it running by putting gas in the carb with a suitable squeeze bottle and choke it with the choke when it is at medium to high RPM.
The idea is to draw crud thur the carb by creating a high presure difference.
If that dont work then I would open up the jet screws (counting how may times I take them out),and put the choke on full. Then turn it over. Again the idea is to draw the crud thru.
If that dont work then I would resign to the fact that I had to pull the carb. and have it sent out or do it myself.

If the tractor had gas left in it after it was last run, it's almost certain the fuel pump and carburetor are gummed up with varnish from the old fuel. Disassembling and cleaning both should solve your problem. Both the fuel pump are carburetor are simple and easily disassembled/rebuilt. And gasket kits for those Kohler engines are cheap and readily available. (See any reputable lawn and garder equipment dealer).

This is all true but first at least remove the plug and look down there. Ok you did and the air filter isn"t full of crap, great. That appendage is a fuel pump and if you look closer it has a little lever for manual pumping or priming. It stands to reason that if the fuel pump actuating lever is sitting now on high side of cam you will not get the stroke required so rotate the crank. Afterwards you can get a good stroke and just perhaps it will suck to prime so the engine will at least warm up to a point you actually know what it wrong.Any crap or gell should be let out the carb drain or fuel lines before this of course. The pump must be primed with new gas.

Two years ago I traded for a arins with a 14 HP Kohler that had Started been setting for a few years . The carb will need overhualed also the fuel pump as that old gas has left Valves in pump unserviceable probly be cheaper to buy new one . try gravety feeding carb and by passing pump to see if pump bad . also ended up replaceing Coil, Points, spark plug , spark plug wire , Condenser ,& re-wireing hole tractor . Head gasket. After that engine ran as good as new .

More than likely the fuel pump diaphragm is shot. Take it apart and put a new one in it.

I tried to buy a new diaphragm, but they were not available. I made a new one from a piece of roofing rubber. So far it works fine.

If it was stored with fuel in it, it's probably varnish by now. If stored dry, the gaskets in the carb or the diaphram in the fuel pump if it has one may have dried out. either way, you will probably need a carb rebuild kit, and maybe fuel lines cleaned or replaced. There also may be corrosion or debris in the tank so check that too.
