need to dig some post holes and was wondering if a ford 2n is enough to get it done without tearing it up. The little guy is worth his weight in gold when it comes time to clean horse corrals .I can rent a skid steer with attachment for same price as buying digger if its going to be too much for my little tractor....

If you have hard soils or rocks I would rent the skidsteer! You can put down pressure on the auger with it and they are much easier to get the point exactly where you want it to be.

Only thing I can think to add to the previous comments about a N series Ford or any tractor without live PTO doesn't really apply in a post hole digging situation, except for the fact an aftermarket overrunning clutch would be a good idea to leave on the back of the PTO.

If and when you do get the auger stuck, one way to clear it is to jack up one rear wheel enough to clear the ground. Next, with engine off, gear shift in neutral and PTO engaged, turn the elevated wheel backwards. This turns the auger in reverse and it should unscrew. This does not work with a live PTO, and you can even try this one at home.

My dad put in 8 acres of grapes and used a ferguson TO30 to put in every post. The TO30 isnt much different then the ford. Just be caresful when your going down and pick it up every 8-10in to clear out any dirt, and if it starts bouncing be very careful, it means theres probably a rock there and when it screws itself under the rock the ford wont have the power to pick itself up and youll have to take the auger off and get a pipe wrench on it and unscrew it. Ive watched my dad do this alot. The JD5500N will rip the the rock right out.

Or the JD 5500 will tear the posthole digger to pieces. I run one with an 18 horse JD mini, and it works fine. DON'T run it at PTO speed- "things happen" too quickly.

It's easy to tear up a post hole digger, but the N tractor should not really know it's there. My brother in laws old Kubota of 15 hp handled a 12 inch digger just fine.

The 9N might lack a little of the finer points of position control, live hyd/pto, but should work fine esp since you are familiar with it.

oh yeah, a ford 2n should be able to handle a 12 inch pot hole digger just fine. Just watch your bite (don't just DROP the three point- control the amount of digging)
