Paint hardeners showed up when?

When did paint hardener chemicals show up historically? I would imagine that it first arrived in the automotive industry and then somewhat later in the agricultural applications. I don't think too many of the tractors I have restored from the 40's had hardened paint, likely just plain old machinery enamel. Anyone know when hardeners first arrived on the scene?

OK then, if all the stuff down below is correct about hardeners, then what kind of paint was used on cars and trucks in the 20's to the 60's? Would that have been laquer paints? It sure wouldn't have been regular enamels, even the old vintage cars had paint that was pretty hard and durable. MMB

the old stuff was usually nitrocellulose lacquer. there was also straight enamels too. dulux was an early enamel. you would have to hot pot dulux to spray it, hot plate with water, can of paint in the water, heat to about 120 degrees to shoot it. to wet sand it you would use white gas. yup, white gas. i dont miss those days.

I was painting tractors and trucks for college money in the late 60"s, and the hardeners were starting to show up here, although they weren"t fast to catch on. The old enamels and laquers were starting to leave the shelves about that time. The first Imron I used was in the early 70"s.

Yep, i agree with Kentucky Ed. I worked at a Jeep Dealers body shop, and the new Acrylic enamels came out around the early 70's. Our shop was in the basement of the building, below the mechanic shop, and dust was a problem when using synthetic enamel for painting, because of them dropping heavy car parts on the floor above us. A large clear plastic tarp helped keep most dust off the paint jobs, and the introduction of Acrylic Enamel and hardener made the paint dry quicker! That was the good thing about the new paint-the bad thing was the hardener, which they didn't warn us about all of the bad things! They just said that there might be hazzards from using the paints. Hardener warnings, and air supply masks, etc. didn't come out until much later!

My memory's the same as Eds. First one I remember was Imron.
