Rarity - A Wild Boar
While out rabbit hunting Joe and Andrew shot this wild boar just northwest of Hudson last week. According to the Michigan DNR, hunters with a valid hunting license of any type are encouraged to shoot feral swine (free-ranging wild pigs). Boars like this are believed to be escapees from game farms and the DNR is trying to prevent a breeding population from being established, as the swine may carry diseases that could affect domestic animals. Hillsdale County is one of 28 Michigan counties where there have been reports of feral swine. This Boar was shot just 7 miles north me. All the years I lived here I never seen one. Mike

I hope someone had more than buckshot in their shotgun to kil this thing...you'd have to get pretty close to one with #6 or even #4 shot.

There are a few here in Logan County in Ohio. They seem to be close to the Miami River. 2 of my Amish neighbors each got one during bow season for deer. They were butchered and canned that same day.

Not big hogs. Probably in the neighborhood of 140 to 160 lbs. Reported to be easy shots with crossbow.... Gene

Hey Mike go just 100 miles south of here off caprock in TX and they got those wild hogs everywhere and have to run low electric fence around crops and hay fields to help keep them out. Huge problem once they get started. Even been a few spotted here in past but not a problem yet as the big rattlers probably ate them? :)

hogs and snakes. in reply to Glen in TX, 02-05-2007 17:45:47
Actually hogs are only second to humans when it comes to killing snakes.Domestic , at least, not sure if that also holds true with wild hogs. Its the layer of fat that protects the hogs from rattler bites.Hogs hate snakes as a rule and will do about anything to kill a snake.

Hi Glen,
Them rattlers must be big ones I sure wouldn't want to me up with one of them especially if they can eat a pig that size. Mike

Haven't had the ferals here yet so I don't know if they kill rattlers or not but I do know the Longhorn bulls and cows we use to have would kill rattlers and coyotes.

Our Highland cattle were the same way; I followed them around one day & found 3 dead snakes they'd killed. No piosonous snakes but I'm sure they didnt discriminate.

Hear they"re good eating when properly prepared. Somehow, I"d expect they"re pretty tough. Mike is right, open season on feral pigs. One comes my way, and it is next stop - the freezer!

Here in Missouri, when the megafarms ran the price of hogs to nothing, they say alot of hogs escaped and crossed with wild razorbacks which makes for one big wild hog. They also say they tear up the habitat rooting, and cause all kinds of problems. Same rules here, they can be shot on sight.

I have heard that there were some wild hogs down around Cabelas area, between there and Monroe. Never heard of any around home, Kent County, suspect the black bear that seen to be moving in would not be good neighbors to hogs. But then again our great DNR says there are no wolves above the bridge but seen a pair hanging in a guys corn crib up there so....

their darn good eatin according to my brother ,he raised them in northern alberta for a few years..
I was down in Southern Chile few years back where they hunt Wild Boars on Horseback ,they use big ol Dogs to chase em down and then a BIGGER dog to wrestle em ..then they get in there with a machete to finish the thing off ,biggest one in the area was taken by the owner of the camp I stayed at ,it weighed 400 lbs..
I saw it's head and the tusks were 5" long ..
Also saw what those tusks will do to a horse !!!
Great fun when the prey fights back!!
and they thought us Canadians were crazy for running the rivers down there!!!
