Kubota Diesel wont go

Hello all,

I've got a little Kubota D600-B in my Cub Cadet GT that I just rebuilt (spun bearing). The thing ran well before the rebuild, spun bearing and all!

I tried to fire it up tonight but all I managed was a lot of smoke! The fuel system was bled, I double checked the valve clearances so now I'm stuck since this is the first diesel I've gone this far with.

I would like to check the pump timing but the caps on the pump are so tight I think I'm going to strip them if I turn any harder.

Any ideas for the Diesel rookie?

Thanks,

K

Just don't use ether and glowplugs at the same time. Ain't pretty.

You didn't go into any detail on exactly what was done to the engine when it was overhauled. Like Rod said, if you have smoke, then the injectors are getting fuel to them. It could be a compression issue. Is this an engine with no sleeves? Were the cylinders honed out as part of the overhaul Job? The rings may not be seated, thus resulting in loss of compression. You might need to give it a sniff of ether to get it started.

New:

Rings
Bearings
Glow-Plugs
Gaskets & Seals

I honed the cylinder walls (they didn't show any wear)

I lapped the valves

The injectors were pop tested.

I wish I could check the compression but a Diesel set is way beyond my budget at this time.

I've been told that I inadvertently changed the pump pressure on two cylinders so I'm going to start there.

I had the ether can in my hand last night but the battery died down as I went to get it a whiff. Maybe tonight...

Are you sure the glow plugs are working?? I have a dozen of those engines. also be sure the mechanical fuel pump is putting out enough pressure. bleed and bleed again. Once you get it running after overhaul will probably start good. Also a little oil in the intake will sometimes help.

I replaced all the glow plugs when I went through the engine. I think they're working just fine.

I think I'm not getting enough fuel..

Where there's smoke, there's fire; and where there's fire, there's fuel. So, if it's smoking, the fuel should be getting in there. So, it's not igniting. That could be timing, compression, or a lack of heat. Are the glow plugs working? Could be something simple like that. Beyond that, I'd recheck the timing, and perhaps the valve setting. There could also be a problem with the injectors (spray pattern). I don't know much about that particular engine, and I'm sure there are other experts here that can help you out a lot more, but I'll say this. I've often found that a problem will be found in the one area that I had absolutely ruled out, that it simply could not be, because I'd checked it already. After trying multiple other things, and ruling them out systematically, and going back to a list of possible causes, I'd come back to the first thing I ruled out... It's happened more than once because I was too stubborn to go back and double check.... Good luck.

Rod

Hi kopeck,

I would recheck my mechanical timing first then crack each injector line nut just a little loose then fire the engine.

When the engine starts then tighten each injector line nut.

The mechanical timing should be dead on. I really took care to make sure all the dots lined up before I put the cover back on. Not only that but it's a PITA to get the cover back off, the engine it installed backwards so it has to be pulled out to get the timing cover off.

I did have the lines off and turned it over to bleed the lines. I think I have a fuel problem though. Just got an email for a fellow who knows these little engines pretty well. He says the injector pump should shoot fuel 6" when turning over, two of mine just dribble.

I think I figure that one out and I might be getting some where...

Thanks,

K

Most Kubota's have an electric fuel solenoid. They work backwards of others, meaning they need to "let loose" shortly after you turn them off so they are open for the next start. These act up frequently. Make sure you are getting fuel.

You can check it by watching and listening for several seconds after you cut the power. You should be able to see or hear it release.

Thanks though,

Injection pump timimg is set by the shim stack under the mounting face of incection pump. Unless you removed or lost shims the pump timing will be where it was set when you started this project.

The shim is there but I was curious if it was still in time.

Interesting though when we bled the fuel system #1 & #3 where pushing about half the fuel as #2. The air was out (no bubbles from the return line) so I'm not sure what was going on there.

I should have probably said that before but I bled the system a couple of week ago...

Put it in the garage with a heater next to it for a few hours. If it is as cold where you are as it is here, have fun starting it.

Oh yeah...It had my shop heater blowing on it for about an hour before I turned the key. I then let it rest (and the battery recharge) for another hour all while the heater was on and had the same results.

I guess it could still be cold (it was 3 deg out side) but I would think that a couple of hours would have done the trick...

Thanks,

K
