I saw your title and was interested because I to noticed some circlular openings in the ice on my pond saturday. They were much smaller, but contained open water and slush around them. I found it odd as cold as it was. There seemed to be somewhat of pattern relating to the original creek bed.

Looks like a spot the ducks kept open for a while after the rest of the pond froze up.

Yep, there be a spring, or some mighty deep water at that spot, but it is most likely a spring...the old sweedish gentleman across the lake from us growing up, told us kids to avoid those areas after first feeze up and again 'tward spring...good fishing around those spots but you had to be carefull, some would just get about 2" of ice on them , and the surrounding ice would be 10" or more...Shawn

Thanks Allan. Any idea what could cause these. The ice was very thin, and the circles perfect.

When we see something like that, it's either a spring below that area that kept open water until it froze last, or rain/melt water that puddled on top of the ice and froze like that. Dunno....

my guess is that you have some spring action coming from under ground. this water is the warmest and last to freeze. colder/still water around outside edges froze first and made the circle edge, then warmer water froze inside the "ring". only my guess tho...
