I have heard of adapting a combine axle to use for a wide front axle on tractors. Could some of you shed some light on this. The pros and cons. I would like a wide front on my JD 70 for haying but the price for a Deere part is a bit more than I can justify.

Randy,
I going to yes it can be done. I wanted a wide front for my Oliver Super 77 but at the time I couldn't find an OEM and when I did find one it was in bad shape or a bunch of parts missing from it.
I was at this local bone yard one day. I was looking for a particular part for my combine and I got to looking at the rear axles on the combines that was there and I thought to myself I wonder if I could get one of theses axles to work on a tractor. I came across this JD combine and it look to be in good shape and I decided to take the axle from it and few other things to make it have power steering. For a while there I didn't think I was ever going to get it done and make it look half way decent and work ok. Had to do a lot of cutting - welding - fabricating and how I wanted to have the pivoting on it. Had some trial and errors.
But I was surprised how well it worked when I got it done. It's still one the tractor today and still working so far. Good luck. Mike

Dad did it on an H once, worked OK for most things, but wouldn't turn very sharp.

I know the newer combines have a better steering angle, though. If I were to do it I'd get the rotary valve and go full hydraulic steering...

Saw one on a Massey Harris 44 . They had a tube somthing like the sterring tower on a offset farmall with a pump on the back side steeringwheel on the front . No steering shaft at all . Lines run down to cylinder on axle . looked like it would have worked fine . If ya did`nt know tractors you would of thought it belonged there . If I remember right it used the tractors resivor .

I gave consideration to using a combine axel for a wide front on a tractor but did not pursue it very far. Since then I bought a P.S. unit from a MH 65 for my own 65, which was manual. While removing the P.S. unit, it struck me that it would be easy to put a wide front from a 65 on an M or similar size tractor. It looked to me like the front casting could be adapted and bolted on and if the donor tractor had P.S. about all you would have to do is provide lines and a hydraulic pressure source in order to have P.S. We do need to arrange something to connect the steering wheel/control to the front unit. Using a combine axel you might be limited by the design of the turning radius. Improper caster and camber might also complicate things.
