Here in my part of woods ( north east Texas) some sale barns sale some calves that are anywhere from 200 pounds to 600 pounds at the very beginning of the sale. These calves usually go for 20 to 50 cents a pound cheaper than the "regular" calves that sell later on in the sale.
I know some calves seem a little off or little slower but allot of them look good and act normal. Just curious what the calves are and what dettermines them to get put in the front of the sale.
Been going to sale barns a long time but never really thought about it much till last couple weeks, asked around and no one could really give me a good answer.
Thanks
JM

Every auction seems to do things a bit different but many of them here called those smaller bunches sold early in small pens jackpot pens or jackpot cattle and sometimes they bring less and sometimes not. Those that been tanked up on water and feed going to weigh more there but not when you get them home. Many times large bunches haven't been there long or just unloaded and sold and ran thru reloaded again so like others said you got think about the shrink on different bunches.

Here, there are almost no finished cattle, all ours are feeders (400-600 pounds) or stockers (700-900 pounds). These all sell first, then the fed cattle and weigh cows. Last is the feeders and stockers that come in after the sale starts.

Best price is always on the early ones, since they have been there overnight and already taken about all the shrink they will.

Around here NE Missouri they will sometimes sell small lots usually up to five at he beginning of the sale because the buyers are going to wait until the truckload lots sell. ad if you only sell a lot of one or two they will be cheaper than a pot load or even a gooseneck load usually the bigger lots sell in the order consigned
