Some things just go better unsaid. But, I'll take it if you're giving. :>)

There used to be an ISO 5011 test of several air filters designed for the Duramax diesel engine in the tool section (type in K N filter and scroll). The last time I looked, it didn't seem to be there. Anyway, the K & N passed about 44 times more dirt than the AC Delco and only flowed about 1% better. The K & N also plugged up in half the time. Other brands of filters had results in between.

Hell you can still see the road I used to live in the big valley in California near Stockton on mornings when the fog set in real good you could almost make out the hood ornament on the front of your car. We didn't have the good lights that we have today and California wouldn't let you use fog lights. BUMMER

I've got to jump in here and get an education, since you're talking K&N air filters. I've got 2 trucks, both Chevy 1500 Z71's. I've got K&N's in both. I had good luck with them, but now I've moved to NE and live on 7 miles of gravel, and am in much more gravel and grain dust than I used to be. Is it a bad idea having the K&N filter?????

Hopefully you don't have a k&n air filter in that truck...otherwise your engine would have eaten it's weight in dust!

I"ve ran a K&N filter on my GMC truck here in South Texas for the last 13 years, 271,000 miles. The only thing I have found I didn"t like was they shrink over time. I cleaned it every 3 months. Gets pretty dirty going down the dirt roads. If I could run them on my tractors without getting bumped up into another class, I would. Just my opinion.....

The reason they breathe so good is that the filter is pretty coarse. This can let dirt through if they are not oiled just perfectly. If you over oil them (easy to do) they will let some of the oil into the air intake tube and past the throttle body and then foul the mass airflow sensor. If you have a turbo diesel they can let enough dirt through to take out the veins on the cold side of the turbo, then the engine gets to eat the dirt too. Those things are probably fine for city driving but out in the dirt they are pretty risky.

Someone actually tested them...see the link below & draw you own conclusions.
