I just read on the Alabama Extension website that the USDA has unveiled the new farm program. Can anything involving the government be good? According to the article the program will start allowing payments to farmers that produce crops other than traditional staples-specialties. The article also left me with the impression that the farm bill only benefits about half of all farmers.
Why didn't they buy all my hay equipment for me?
Signed, out of luck, poor, and cynical

We will see all sorts of ideas & preposals.

We will end up with about what we have now.

Will be fun to watch the fur fly in between. :)

Remember, that new preposal also has a 200,000 total income limit on payments (farm & non-farm income). For real farms, with feast & famine price cycles where you lose money for 5 years, then hit it big with luck & good planning, only to lose money again for 3-4 years. Many times the govt payment is bigger than the actual farm income.

These days the govt needs to have control of farmers - the payments are pretty much to buy compliance with various environmental programs, know how many acres of what are going to be produced, and so forth.

The govt could not allow farms to go back to being on their own. The govt would get hurt worse than the farmers these days!

It was started with good intent until the grain co. lobbyists got involved, corn is at a price it should have been at 25 years ago, watch cargill ect. try to get more acres out of crp, if the wildlife groups don't out lobby them!

I think that part of the goal is to create incentives to produce other crops that can be used for fuel. With all the new ethanol plants being put into production, it seems that now there is some concern that there will be a shortage of corn?

My uncle Joe insisted that government "help" was like moving blood from one arm to the other and spilling 85% on the way.
