Attorneys for the NFL sent a letter to Fall Creek Baptsit Church here in Indianapolis demanding the church not have a souper bowel party when they became aware of a flyer promoting the party, nor could the church project the image on a 12 foot screen the church planned to use for their party nor could they charge a small fee to attendees for snacks,The letter further stated the chuch or anyone else is banned from using the copyrighted "Souper Bowel"(protecting myself from being sued--you know the phrase) in connection with any promotion of such a party. NFL counsel Rachel L. Margolies further stated it is a against the law for for the church to have a TV screen larger than 55 inches AND the church is limited to the use of only one TV. The NFL even took exception to the church's plan to try influencing party goers with a video of Colts coach Tony Dungy and Bears coach Lovie Smith giving their Christian witness! The church pastor says their intent was to give the public an option to going to places where alcohol is served and the surrounding may not be appropriate for children to attend. The pastor said they won't break the law, but sees a double standard when bars can use large screened TVs and charge for seats, food and drinks. My question is how could the NFL be harmed by all this?Isn't that the intent of any law ,to give protection from harm?

Pro sports are nothing but a bunch of Spollied Brats that think the law & rules of the country don't apply to them . It starts in at a early age if they have natural ability the are pamperd , by collages if they break the rules just slap hands and let them play ,I can remember when if you broke rules you were OUT! . You hear of players geting into trouble at bars at 2 AM . Don't the schools have the *alls to make rules and inforce them and it carrys on in Pro Sports. Thats whats wrong with Pro Sports if they get a trouble maker get rid of him that will send a message to the rest . I think a more money should be spent on Education than SPORTS.

We've got to learn to stand up for our rights in this country be it against the government or greedy lawyers and business men. It may not be the "Christian" thing to do but think the church elders need to tell the NFL and their lawyer to kiss their holy a$$es. The name of the game Superbowl may be copyrighted but the showing and watching of the game surely isn't. If it's put on the open air waves it's in a public domain therefore free for anyone to watch. If it's put on cable the cable franchise has paid a fee for all their clients to be allowed to view it. Once tyhat fee is paid anyone is free to watch it and it's free to watch. If the church want's to have TV playing, of whatever size, that's their right as long as they've paid their cable bill. If they collect a voluntary donation for any food or beverage provided on the day of the game, again that's their business, not the NFL's. If the people that go to the church want to watch the game while their eating that food that's their business, again nothing to do with the NFL. If they want to be a$$holes about the whole "making a profit off the game deal" they'd better start finding a way to get a cut of every bet made on the game, every chip and beer bought for other "unsanctioned" parties, etc etc etc. The way this world is going it's not gonna be long until you can't say the name of anything "copyrighted", think about it, etc without being charged a fee.... Hey, maybe I ought to copyright my name and charge a fee to anyone else that wants to be named Wayne, or Philip...LOL....In the end though what it all comes down to, in my opinion anyway, is who wants to watch a bunch of spoiled, overpaid, prima donnas out there throwing around a funny looking ball anyway...I've got other, more important things to do on a weekend...???

Our Catholic church has had 'Souper Bowl Sunday" for a number of years. Youth group members stand at the exit doors holding large soup kettles and collect donations for the local food shelves. 'spose the NFL will sue someday?

Good for the NFL. There is no place for sports in the church. It is great to have testimonies from these players and coaches but opening the doors to watch the game is just a bit to much. I am a minister of the gospel and if the church I am in was to do this sort of thing I would resign. My two cents.

I agree with robert-sports in general is a joke and on a side note I would have to wonder about the spirituality of a church that throws a superbowl party. But to each their own-just count me out.

sad part is the people of Ia will not support a pro team. We have basewball minor leaque football and soceor in town but they have a hard time going and they sure don,t pay any wages to count, Got to have a lot of population to make it work. yes some players are overpaid but the owners just tack it on. Used to go to Twins and royals games also Vikings can,t pay it now

wou;d spread the talent very thin and NO ONE would be able to command $50.000,000/year salaries as the rest of the team wouldn't have enough players of that caliber to enable Mr Rich player to show his stuff and be actually WORTH the money.

Ticket prices would have to drop to a level where there were enough fans attending games such that the team can meet payroll.

Ticket prices do not need to be in the $500 to $5000 per ticket range in order to assure a "good game" since you can see "GOOD GAMES" played by High School teams.

Pretty soon taxpayers will have to pay to put new stadiums in the prisons because that's where most of them are headed or already there. I used to be a weekend NFL freak but since steroids and money came into play I could care less and it's getting that way with colleges too! NASCAR will probably be the next casuality or is already there. Budweiser is the big spender in sports sponsors why do you think they would allow Christanity to ruin there Bazillion dollar budget? I agree let's go camping or some trivial thing that the big spenders can't horn into.LOL, Right On! Like my mom and dad said 50+ years ago "This world is going down the outhouse" I left out the explitive.

How about if you had the TV setting there and had the remote in the middle of the table and let the chips fall where they may... Don't mention the Super Bowl anywhere though. Most church suppers I have been to just charge to eat to cover costs, not to sit and talk or whatever.

Great thread!
I thought I was the ONLY guy in America who could care less about sports.
Now if I could just get some of you to join me at the polls to vote down these down these referenda that use tax money for a stadium.
Oh wait!
They didn't let us vote on it. They just did a back door deal and rammed it down our throats.
Grrrr.

So I gather from what this means, does this mean that if I had a whole bunch of friends over to watch the game (IF I ACTUALLY CARED ABOUT FREAKIN' FOOTBALL THAT MUCH, LOL) They would throw me in jail? OBVIOUSLY NOT. How is watching football for fun in a church any different than fun with your friends at home???

Wow, this is a really great country, if you can't have t.v. for a little bit of fun for the youth in church! This is absolutely ridiculous... what football and other sports do to people!!

No.

But if you charged at the door for your friends to watch it on your big screen they could.

Copyright! Same as renting a movie for home use and charging to watch it. No piping in HBO to a bar etc. If they "profit" from copyright material then its ill-legal. Church or not, has mothing to do with it. Would you feel the same if a bar did that to gain customers? Remember the "closed circuit" fights a few years ago?

what in the world is a super bowl, seems like someone last month was talking about some other goofy bowls of stuff and something called a world scaries or something like that.

I dont have time for such foolishness, I have livestock that needs tending, machinery that needs fixin, fences to repair, feeders to fill, waterers to clean, 3 kids to homeschool, food to cook, dishes, washing etc..... ...i never get to sleep before midnight, we only have one 19" tv and a set of rabbit ears to catch the news if we get a chance for the weather.

TV continues to ruin our country and I refuse to pay it any attention, my kids do get to watch cartoons on saturday mornings but thats about it, call me unamerican or whatever you wish but it sure makes for more family time, fun time with the kids.

If you ask someone like me, that is where our country has gone by ignoring the obvious, literally to hell in a handbasket

we dont have many neighbors we just have people that live next door that you wave at and they look at you like your derranged or something

We have some folks move in just 1/4 mile down the road a couple months back, we made a cheesecake and some cookies and got all the kids together, walked down and knocked on the door, they stood there with their mouths open and said you are here to what, welcome us to the neighborhood?

we said yea, we made you something, they just stood there and didnt know what to say, the kids introduced themselves and then it was silent after the introductions, they had no idea what to do..... ..... i was just floored on my walk home

have no idea what they thot after we left, we gave them our phone number and such and told them to stop by blah blah..... ....or call if they needed anything like a jump start, had a flat, needed sugar, eggs, flour, milk..... .you know the drill

you would have thot we landed in a space ship in their yard, colored green with antenna cropping our of our heads

I was born 2 generations too late to live in this mess of a nation, I get so frustrated when I see things progressively getting worse.

Thank the good lord I still have my freedom to do what I want to an extent and can raise my children that way as well.

Okay, off my soapbox now, NEXT!!!!

if you will read the fine print all kinds of events are fully copyrighted and there are restrictions on showing them. Bars ans such places have to pay dearly for showing them. I dont agree buts thats the way it is. They could get a licence for probably a small fee.

I haven't given the NFL the time of day since they told Arizona voter's they had to have a Martin Luther king holiday or lose the Super bowl back in the early 90's. We voted it down during a regular election then about 6 months later had to have a "special" election. Close, but they got their way.

Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for some young lawyer to slap a bunch of overpaid people in the face with a little bit of Christian values.
And I hope that is exactly what happens, the NFL should have to build them a new church, a BIG NEW CHURCH.

I think supporting over priced athletes playing childhood games is a waste of time anyway. No, I can't do what they do and I doubt very many athletes can do my job as well as I do. I much rather watch a new born calf get up and nurse for the first time.

There, I feel much better.

Trial Attorney's are destroying the principle's of our nation. Please think of this when you vote. Ask yourself, "What politicians were trial attorney's before becoming a politician? It makes a difference no matter what party you support. I will NEVER vote for anyone that was a trial attorney. They sell us all out for their own gain at any opportunity, even at the expense of the church. Its time we all fight back by voting!

Like tax payers building a stadium on property after owners were forced out and it is all for private business. If it were going to be profitable they could have got lot of private financing. BUT with if, private they could not have got that property.

i think building sports stadiums with public tax money is wrong. if they do build it with tax money, then the admission for all taxpayers in that area should be forevermore FREE! let the sprots teams finiance their stadiums the best way thay can. i bet there would be a lot less multi-million dollar players then. sports is out of control with fantastic salaries for their players. it is not longer a games of skill and talent, but a game of money. i don't watch much TV and even less 'super bowls'. as fas as i'm concerned i could give a big hairy rats rear less who wins.

The NFL tv network owned the rights to several college bowl games that were not shown on time warner. Time warner claims they couldnt afford to pay what the NFL wanted. Might be time to stop watching the NFL, let them come back to earth.
