The Iowa BB61 and WisconsonBB64 were struck fron the Naval Vessel Register ( Category B) on 3-17-06. The Iowa was towed from (I went to see it!!!) Newport RI ( Next to the Carrier's Forestal and Saratoga) through the Panama Cannal to Susian Bay , near San Fransisco. The New Jersy BB62 is a museamum in New Jersy. The Missori BB63 is a museam at Pearl Harbor. All could be recalled. The New Jersy has the most years of use and some metal corousion. The Iowa needs to have the # 2 turret repaired. All of the parts are in the turret. The Missouri is in pretty good shape. The best one is the Wisconson BB64 in Va. The defense bill for 2007 directs the navy to keep the spare parts and that the Iowa and Wisconson must be kept preserved. The Navy sometimes DOES care about Musemum ships for Reactivation. The Massachusetts was in dry dock a few years ago and had a leak around a propeller shaft. They wanted to cut off the shaft and welt a patch as a quick fix but the Navy said no.

The frames of the Iowa class battleship around the last frames must be old footage, I don't think the Navy still has those ships in active duty. Haven't all of them been turned into memorials. I think the last was the Wisconsin to have been retired to mothballs, and struck from the register? Anybody know? I still think the fire power of the Iowa class is impressive, and electronic countermeasures don't work on those 16" shells. Signed, impressed U.S. citizen

They've all been retired since 1991 or so. The Wisconson (Norfolk, VA), New Jersey (Camden, N.J) and Missouri (Pearl Harbor) are all War Memorials and serve in some manner as a stategic reserve but they have almost no chance of ever being reactivated, key peices of equipment have not been produced since the 1940s and their last tours of duty used up much of the Navy's on hand parts.

The USS Iowa was decommission in 1990 after an explosion in turrent number two. The turrent was never repaired due to the massive cost. The navy officially struck USS Iowa from the Naval Vessel Register (NVR) 17 March 2006. This is likely the first step in preparing Iowa for her ultimate transfer for use as a museum ship. For several years plans had been under way to berth the Iowa in San Francisco, California, opening the battleship there as a museum; however, in 2005 San Francisco’s city council, citing opposition to the Iraq War and the military's policies regarding homosexuals, voted 8-3 against maintaining Iowa in the city. Apparently they are opposed to history books that proclaim the US won World War 2.
