What were the max RPMs on the 282 diesel used on the 706.

I have found the hp ratings and such on tractor data but I cannot find any engine speed info

What is the difference between speed advance and load advance??

Man did I open a can of worms - now I am really curious

Most injector pumps use an advance device to improve fuel economy simular in theory to spark distributors on gas engines. "Speed advance" advances the injection timing as engine speed increases, "load advance" advances the timing under light loads. I assume IH chose to use load advance on the 656 because the engine turns slower.

So I presume turning up a 560 to 2800 rpms like the 660 or combine engine is totally out of the question as it probably had no timing advance to it at all??

theres only 2 ways to get more power out of a diesel more air like turbo or supercharger or more rpms everybody has there choice sometimes they do both.

holy smokes, did they do anything different with the cam or pump for that 2800 rpms, i wonder if someone could turn up the throttle linkage/stop on a 656 or 706 without adjusting the injector pump internally and get that kind of rpms and hp out of it

anyone have any idea??

Uses a different governor spring, also a 656 has "load advance" and a 706 and combine engine have "speed advance" The actual fuel delivery in volume per revolution is the same for all three engines. I know this because a friend has his 656 set up to 706 specs.

Bob;
My 1959 IH 660 uses the same 282 engine and rated at 84 horsepower at 2800 RPM... Gene

holy smokes, i would have never guess that, i was thinking like maybe 2000 for a diesel, i know the 560 rpms are like 1800 and a HP rating of 60, and i figured maybe 1900 for a 656 at 65 hp but never thot a 282 diesel would be turning 2300 for 72HP

I am by no means an IH expert - just going by Nebraska test results. Test # 856 done in 1963. 706 diesel, 282 c.i., etc. At rated engine speed of 2300 RPM it put out 72.4 horsepower. When tested with the 1000 RPM PTO it was run at an engine speed of 2072 RPM and put out 67 horsepower.

sounds terrific, thanks for the info, i had no idea they turned that much, i used to run a 706 gasser with the larger 312 i believe or something like that engine for a farmer when growing up and it turned pretty high if i remember right, it was a gasaholic though, i would fill it up in the morn and add more at lunch to get me through the rest of the day if i was working it hard, my boss had an 856 diesel adn he could run all day and never fuel
