Ford ZF 5 speed transmission update

I contacted Lucas Oil and explained what I have and asked them for a recommendation. These good people have recommended their #10052 semi synthetic ATF at 75% and their #10130 synthetic oil stabilized at 25%.
I've always heard good things about Lucas lubes and seen them stand up to some pretty abusive operating conditions in industrial gearboxes and drives. So I'm going to give this stuff a shot in the Ford. Thanks everyone.

My assumption is that you have the typical 5 speed stick out of the hump of a ford 150. I don't know much about them numbers. Anyway try this trick and if it don't work you are only out a few bucks. Use pipe inslation (split tube type) to cover the shifter between he boot and knob. doesn't do one thing but keep the noise below the floorboard.

When you figure out the problem post it on here. I doubt you have the big ZF 5 speed in the f-150 but maybe it does. I have one in my 88 f-350 and it is a terribly noisey piece of junk. Has been noisy from the day I bought it but it is getting worse. Especially when you are lugging it through town. If you ask me they went backwards in technology when they put those in the trucks. Ford should have recalled every one of them and put automatics in them. Oh wait, ford is out of money. Wonder why!

If the tranny has begun making noise, POSSIBLY from a worn bearing, or a shift fork that has lost it's plastic coating, what's the "magic oil" going to do?

If the tranny had just been rebuilt, I could see wanting to put the "best" oil possible in it, but with this one that's already making noise, I suspect the $$$ for the oil could be better used by finding out what's REALLY wrong.

Good Luck, though, I hope the oil DOES work for you, that would sure beat pulling the tranny!

Please understand, I paid $1,500 for this truck 3 weeks ago, I have no desire to dump a $1.000 into the transmission of a 15 year old truck. I've been driving an 89' F-150 with the same transmission and the same noise for 4 years and it has 200,000 miles on it, and it's still going strong. I just want to quiet it down, if it fails I call Sutty and tell him to come after it. A major component failure is a death warrant for these type vehicles as far as I'm concerned.

AN F150 with a ZF5? I thought they had MD50s and F250s and F350s had the ZF5.

Neighbors 88 F-150 4.9 straight six has a ZF. Not sure why it is there, but it is. Co workers F150 has one too. He has a 5.0. Everyone else up here has the Mazda Kogyo Toyo. Helped put a clutch in the neighbors truck. Dang that thing is heavy. Built right, though. The mazda unit looks like a toy in comparison.

Going by the pictures in the repair manuals, it looks like the ZF box. As I stated I'm more GM orientated, and more familiar with the Saginaw and New Departure gearboxes. It's just that GM trucks have gotten so expensive, and Fords can be had at reasonable to dirt cheap prices, that I'm not so proud to waste extra money on a GM when a Ford will do. Msybe this is a Mazda box, and it will soon be a mazda box with 'snake oil'in it. If it blows, well favorite daughter has a cell phone.

Mine has a "Mazda"Tranny and I use STP to quieten it down. Has 216,000 miles,going strong yet[aside from the low Speed Tranny noise it makes] Pulls a 11,000 Lb. Jayco 5th wheel RV just fine. I'm with you,Don't worry about it.If it goes it goes,oh, mine is a 1989 F250 w/ 460 CI gas . 18 years old so I to do not worry about it.

If the noise is just normal wear making parts noisy, then the thicker oil may be the way to go.

I think the point Bob is trying to make is, don't ignore a failing part untill it destroys the transmission. My experience with that was with a Dodge 3 spd OD trans. This OD transmission is the old Chrysler 4 spd direct drive car transmission modified into an OD transmission. They reworked the gear ratios so you shift 1-2-4 than back to 3 for the OD ratio. The original design of that trans was that you would shift 1-2-3-4 and spend 90% of your time in 4th gear, that couples the input shaft directly to the output shaft. With no load on the gears/bearings during the 90% of the time you are in 4th gear. When they modified this trans into an overdrive trans, You shift 1-2-4 direct,than back to 3 OD which loads all gears/bearings for 90% of your driving miles. after 80,000 miles of running 3 OD, the trans developed an ever worsening bearing noise. I pulled the trans and found that the plastic ball cage in the input shaft bearing had worn out from the constant load of the 3 OD gear. Chrysler had discovered the problem,and the $15 replacement bearing had a steel ball cage. Had i continued to ignore the noise, I suspect I would have destroyed the transmission, atleast have broken gears and probibly the case.
