Have any of you guys heard anything about Pa. DOT pickup/trailer registration changes? A guy was telling me that you now have to have your pickup plated for the total combined Gross weight.

In Iowa you are not able to haul tractors on a farm plate. It is suppose to be feed, grain, livestock,or hay.Tractors are not considered farm comoditys. You are suppose to have a commercial plate on your tow rig for the total wt. of unit loaded. When you get over 12T you need a class b or better liscense.Over 14T you have to have inspection on both units every yr.This how it was told to me by the DOT when they stopped me.I carry a 18T plate on my truck

Maryland is doing the same thing.A couple hundred dollars a year to tag my 1 ton. Then you have to go the DOT route when you are over 10k pounds. But I guess it's cheaper than a $1500+ scale ticket.Way a cop explained it to me is if your truck/trailer is tagged for 7000# and they weigh it and you gross 16,000# you are liable for the 9000# overweight @.50 a pound ($4500)if they really want to stick it to you. They are even cracking down on the big 5th wheel RV'S being pulled by 1/2 ton pickups.

Guys: This is becoming standard in each state because of the Federal Hiway Safety Act. If states are not in compliance, they lose a percentage of hiway funds. Here in Oklahoma, it affects the farmers and entrepenuers that haul over 26,000 pounds in state. If they cross state lines, the weight limit drops to 10,000 pounds. Oklahoma certifies recreational vehicles as Class D vehicles, which is personal use only and does not have a commercial use. Each state is going to have a leeway in their interrupation of Farm use and what the weight will be. Here, where some of our farmers have larger 10 wheelers with graimn beds and semis, they are having to get the CDL and stickers on side of vehicle. The dually pickups pulling tractors on gooseneck trailers are being required to have DOT stickers on side. James

Yup been round and round about this in PA. You need to register it in combination over 9 ,999 lbs . But first you may have to retitle your pick up for in combination so it is on the Title . This set up is registered for 23,999 lbs and cost in 2006 $ 405.00 to do it . I paid more for the life time registration on the trailer and any thing after 5 years it starts saving you money. This also needs PA inspection every year which is a joke ( check lights drag tires on pavement give me $ 28 .00 thank you) The breaks could be steel on steel but if it locks up it is ok. Now my biggest B%$#@! Is recreational typ IE 5th wheel camper , or boat do not have to have any of it . I called PenDOT and told them it was for a hobbies not for hirer they said that does not matter because of the GVW and farm plates need it as well. They have been cracking down on this the last several years . In PA drivers manual it talks about CDL for in combination over 9999 lbs trailers . No one at State Capital will tell me one way or the other if I am suppose to have CDL . Big Diesel pusher Motor home senior citizens do not .

That's the way it is in Iowa but I haven't heard of anyone being hassled about it. The DOT around here mainly picks on the big rigs. Jim

Don't know about PA, but that is the way Missouri has always been. Not that anybody pays much attention to it.

Yepper's here in MO I see 1 tons with 12LB plates pulling trailers and campers all over the place. and I think those 1 tons got to be around 8K already. But, I guess MO doesn't want to lose those tax dollars by ticketing the campers.

I haven't heard what changes PA. has in mind, but you can bet it will impact most, if not all, pickup owners, motor home owners, camper trailer owners, boat trailer, utility trailers, on and on! I heard the state is contemplating a plan where all motor home drivers will have to get tested for the CDL licenses, and pass the test to be able to drive them! I have no doubt i could pass the test, but my age-82- might keep me from obtaining one! My health wouldn't cause that, but the age might! I still have all of my senses, can drive at night, and in any situations, (stick shift, Drove a Quadra-plex some time ago, in the Fire Company) anywhere at any time, but PA. doesn't like to give CDL's to folks with artificial extremities! I tried long ago to get that CDL type of license, but got turned down! But, that was before they made it mandatory to have one. So, i'm holding my breath!
