Does anyone know if you can mount a 16.9x38 tire on a 14 inch rim? I currently have 15.5's mounted, and do not know why I could not up the tire size on the wheels I have.

Am I missing something?

Yes. Confusion comes from old size and new size markings. Tire mfgrs will tell you that you can safely go with a bead width one inch wider or narrower than the rim width. So a 14 inch rim can handle a 15 inch tire, which by today's new size marking is a 16.9 inch tire. 16.9 is the width of the 'bulge' of the tire, which is wider than the bead width. '50s and before, tires were marked in inches (w/o tenths), and it meant bead width.

JMS;
Have to correct your last sentence. The older tire sizes were measured at the base of the tread and not the bead width... Gene

Google "goodyear farm tire handbook". It is on line. It has a chart towards the back showing the approved rims for each size of tire.

Yep! Actually they might look pretty good on there. My old rims on my Ford were 12x28's with 14.9x28's mounted on them and it looked decent. Not only will the 16.9 be wider,but it will also be taller. So it will affect your ground speed a little.

You can probablty get by with them but that is also about max that I would even think about putting on a 14 inch rim

old - I hear ya on the 14" rim but I have a story for you. I was looking for some 9 bolt 18" rims. I advertised right here on YT. Guy called me 300 miles away and said he had a pair but I had to take the tires too. 20.8 rice tires. I ask him to please measure the rims for me because I had just returned from a 250 mile trip where the 18 " rims turned out to be 16". He said he measured them and to bring the money cause they were indeed 18". I got there and the rims were 14". They were 20.8X38 for sure. Man were those things tall pinched in on that little skinny rim. He had them on a big red tractor for duals. Ugh...that is twice. Any one close to me have a pair of 18 inch 9 bolt wheels? Kansas City area?
