LAST WEEK I POSTED ABOUT MY WIFE'S MONTE CARLO TRANSMISSION.I THOUGHT IT WAS JERKING WHEN TRYING TO TO DOWNSHIFT OUT OF CONVERTER LOCK UP,BUT I FOUND IT IS SLIPPING IN CONVERTER LOCK UP, AND NOT ACTUALLY TRYING TO SHIFT.WE DROVE WITH A SCAN TOOL ON TO FIND THIS OUT, AND ALSO I CAN SEE IT BY WATCHING THE TACH.CAN IT BE A SOLENOID PROBLEM,OR DOES IT NEED A CONVERTER?AND ,THEREFORE A TRANS REBUILD?THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

don't know what year you have-- but if it is one of chevy's 4 spd overdrive autos-- they are all junk--guys in the fire co here have had all kinds of trouble with them some didn't last even 3000 miles guess thats why gm whet to the 5 yr 100K mile guarantee which still doesn't help when your on the road somewhere stuck gave it to the user again I/d r
trade veh's-- also everyone with probs. should contact gm and consumors affairs thats the only they will listen

How many miles on the tranny ?
Replacing a torque converter doesn not necessarially mean rebuilding the tranny, if the converter did not put too much trach in the tranny.

THERE IS NO CODE AND THE PERCENTAGE OF CONVERTER SLIP IS TOO HIGH.WHEN THE COMPUTER CALLS FOR LOCK UP IT IS NOT LOCKING UP IMEDIATLY,AND IT SHOWS A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF SLIP IN LOCK UP AS IT BEGINS TO LOCK.THEN IT WILL SLIP UNDER A LOAD,SOMETIMES JERKING,SOMETIMES NOT.

Don't take this wrong, I am not "nitpicking", I am just trying to get to the bottom of what you are seeing.

Does the scan tool specifically say the slip % is too high, or, are you comparing the scan tool slip reading to a service manual, or are you just ASSUMING the slip % is too high???

Hard to tell just what the problem is, but replacing the convertor, and rebuilding the tranny are two different things.

Further, some GM covertors are designed to slip a certain amount in lockup, under computer control.

Are you simply seeing "convertor slip % numbers" on the scan tool, or is it setting a code, because these numbers are out of design range?

If NO code is being set, the numbers you are seeing are PROBABLY normal for that point in the system's operation, following the commands from the 'puter.
