HI Gang;
Lambing is just starting here on the coast (we have kind weather). Seen a few lambs on our travels in the past couple of days. But the sheep on the mountains dont have their lambs until April when the worst of the weather has finished.

Notice the modern farm sheds in this area are built out dark grey steel cladding - the National Parks dont like bright colours that spoil the appearance of the area.

Cheers David

Pretty!

My Shetlands should start lambing in 4 or 5 weeks. Hard to believe it's that time again already.

HI Jim;
This area is in a National Park, so there are real tight planning regulations on what can be built. Really wouldnt want to have yellow painted shed to spoil the view.
All areas have planning regulations for houses & buildings. Its a small island, and although the towns do have some awful looking buildings, they try to keep the countryside looking nice.
Cheers David

I am and always have been a Fan of Dr.John Wights books "James Herriot". I have all his Publications and many Calenders where scenes such as this are shown. Of course the Dales Lambing must be much different from your area as it is January and you have shown Green Grass and a mild looking Climate for Lambing Season whereas the Dales would be mid Winter and a very raw and hard time for Man or Beast.

Wonderful pic to look at. I like the green grass. Right now I'm looking out the window at a white countryside and the temp is -10 F. Maybe someday my wife and I can travel across the pond to see your country in person. Keep up the good work. Jim

David,

Thanks for the pictures and information. Your posts are always very interesting.

What do the colored spots on the sheep's back represent? I've never raised sheep, so I don't know anything about them. My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in the UK a few years ago and we noticed many sheep with different colors on their backs.

Thanks again,

Tom in TN

The colors on the sheep's wool is a spot of specialized dye that will wash out when the wool is processed. Each farm has a color that is its unique "brand". For instance, Farmer Jones will have a red "J" on the left flank, and Farmer Smith will have a blue "S" on the right shoulder, and Farmer Miller will have a green symbol on the back, etc. Sheep are expert escape artists. This way each farmer will know where the sheep belong. I grew up in southeast Ireland, just across the Irish Sea from David's photographs. -- seantn

So the Government tells you what color you can have your buildings?
