Right or left.Just checking to be sure I am thinking correctly.Facing the door that swings away from you into the room with the hinges on the left?

Thanks all--explaination why I asked. in reply to Bob, 01-26-2007 15:05:39
Thanks for the pic, Bob.I was right.Going to build a wall in an office for a young church member that has had more than his share of problems. The organizer of the work team wanted a left hand door.I have some of both that was left when those s.o.bs burned the house I was remodeling a few years ago.Now at least, I can put one door to good use.

And thanks to everyone for your input.

Your example would be a left handed at 9 out of 10 yards in Omaha, but the 10th one will get you everytime. For some reason they hand them different. So you might want to take a drawing to be SURE, or just put in pocket doors everywhere HA.

Do as Mark-Wisc. says,Makes no difference if the door swings into the room or the hallway-to the inside of the structure or to the outside, back up to the hinge side, door swings right is a right hand-left swing is a left hand. I always did it that way.Any one with a different formula for determineing swing readily agrees this is a no brainer way to determine door swing. 32 year Union Carpenter Retiree and it always made sense to me.

And the answer is.... in reply to msb, 01-26-2007 08:29:38
It Depends!!

I went through this when we re-modeled our house 2 years ago.

You are preparing to order pre-hung doors, right?

I made a drawing of the house, with the doors the desired swing direction. When I ordered the doors, I took the drawing to the door shop and let them determine the Right vs. Left hand-swing.

Might be the easiest way.

Most passage doors will swing out if you're in the room, the hinge could be on either side. But in most homes an entrance door when you are standing outside will swing in, most will be hinged on the left, but could be either way.Entrance doors on commercial buildings ,shops,etc.etc. swing out when standing outside, most of the time but not all the time. Usually passage doors are hung not to obstruct other things when in use. When facing the door and it swings away from you and the hinges are on the right ,it will be a right hinged door,I think.

the way I was taught was when you stand on the outside of the door (so you have to push it away from you to open it) you open it(pushing it open and look at which side the hinge is on. hence grab the knob push it open if the hinges are on the left it is a left hand door if the hinges are on the right it's a right hand door

MSB, The way I was taught is: standing on the hinged side of the door, if the knob is on your right it's a right hand door, if the knob is on your left,it's a left hand door. Jim in N M

If you're asking if the door itself is right-hand or left-hand, it's left hand. Back your self up against the hinge side of the jamb. If the door swings to the left, its a LH swing, if it swings to the right, its a RH swing.

It all depends! If there is something in the way that a right hand hinged door won't clear, then ya hinge it on the left! If the doorway goes into a room, and the left side wall is right there, hinge it on that wall. But, if there is an obstruction the door would hit, or make it not open all the way, then hinge it on the other wall! I don't think there is a set rule for door hinging, just common sense! Except---those stupid shows on TV that the fools that do the work seem like all they are interested in doing is selling lots of stuff, and promoting it for HD or Lowes!
