Little off topic, but still machinery. I have an old 89' F-150 with the 302 fi engine. The oil pressure is all over mostly low and midrange. I've cleaned the connections at the sender and it helps ..maybe. I'm sure I have ok pressure as no lifters clatter and the engine sounds good. Question is anybody know what size pipe thread the sending unit is? I've always had GM and said I would never have a Ford.. now I have 2. I plan on putting an honest to gosh manual pressure guage in this truck as I'm not real trusting of electronic guages especially in an 18 year old truck.
Thanks

My son and I have had three '88 Ford trucks. There is not a gauge on ony of them that is reliable. Most of them read whatever they want whenever thay want. We kept a close watch on fluids and just ran them. Never a problem!

I think the size is 1/8 pipe not sure. I have installed several on cars, trucks, tractors & forklifts and in all cases the gauge kit had all the needed fittings.

I had a similar problem on an 87 F 250. I changed the sending unit which cured it. The truck is still in service with no further problems, Pete

have fords for years- and hate to tell you-- the problem is prob. in the oil pump-- the last few years ford has made lousy pumps some of them only went 30K and did just what you are experiencing== put in heavy oil and I'll bet you the pressure comes back-- I don't mean to run it this way but it will tell you if it is in the pump or guage.. if it is a 2 wh dr not bad to change-- ///// another screwing by ford but they aren't the only ones ++ chevy with the overdrive tranny, dodge with the weak front end toyota with the rust and so on and so on wish you luck

Ford oil pressure sending guages aren't well noted for longevity! I've had 2 Fords that the guages don't work! But, given the fact this last one has 184,000 plus miles on it, i use it every day, and the guage hasn't worked since i don't know when, i don't worry about it! When i start it up, if it ain't rappin' or doesn't go BANG, i know the oil pressure is up, and ready to run. Try an auto parts store. If they have hired, or is operated by somebody with any mechanical smarts, they will probably be able to either tell you what you seek to know, or sell you a new guage! I doubt Ford dealers would have them, given the age of the vehicle, but thats why auto parts stores are there--to sell parts for older as well as newer vehicles!

Boy you want me to use my pea brain here as it has been years since i did any messing with car truck engines , i think that it is 1/4 pipe . Now here is some food for thought if the gauge goes down when ya put power to the engine and come back up when ya let off them ya have a main bearing problem and it will only get worse . Put a knowen good manual gauge to here and she should be running over 35 lbs and more in the 45-50 lbs range on a hot engine at 2000 rpm.
