I have a question for you diesel people out there. I was just told that the fuel companies are going to start changing the way diesel fuel is made which is going to effect older diesel engines. Apparently they are cutting back on the sulfur content and this will effect the running of older diesel engines because of lack of lubrication. I was told this is going to tear up the seals in older engines over time. Does anyone know if this is true and if there will be something that can be added to the fuel so it does not effect older engines? I have an old tractor and pickup that are both diesels. Thanks!!

Mike

One quart of Power Service diesel fuel additive per 50 gallons of fuel in the storage tank/barrel. Problems over. Been doing it for years. Tom

Lots of posts in the archives here; fuel and lubricants forum on tractorbynet.com; archives of the various truck sites (aths.org, ford-trucks.com, dodgetrucks.com ad nauseum...) Fun reading for old diesel runners. Good luck.

Get a fuel additive like Power Service, Schaeffers' etc. and add per instructions. This will improve your lubricity, prevent gelling and boost cetane number. Lots of posts on the link concerning ULSD, etc.

Happened already.

There was diesel fuel.

Then low sulfur fuel.

Now ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.

Biggest issue is lubricating some of the older style fuel pumps.

As little as 1-2% biodiesel makes up for it, adds the lubrication back in.

Here in Minnesota 2% bio has been mandated for a little over a year, allw ere a little scared of the gelling & other issues, but turns out with the sulfur issue, has been a real good thing.

Your fuel supplier is supposed to be adding 'something' to replace the effects of the sulfur.

Supposed to - who knows.

1-2% of soybean squeezings is a good thing.
