Aloha, I have a 1990 Yale 2 ton forklift and have a question on the "inching control" ckt. From my understanding, when the brake is partially applied, the clutch pack is suppose to slip a little to inch into the load and when the brake is depressed all the way, the trans. fluid is supposed to be diverted to the sump (no forward movement). Ok, I was on a slight incline (forks facing uphill) with the selector in the forward position (drive) and had the brake depressed all the way down and when I slowly let it out, the forklift started to roll backwards. It seems that the inching is not working correctly but when I let the brake out further (all the way out), it goes forward (which is normal). Could the inching valve be only half working?? TIA

That is not an inching pedal. It is a trans disconnct/brake. When holding it down,it allows you to hold the machine still while revving the motor to shift, raise or tilt the forks without changing gear position into neutral. It should have a second brake pedal which just applies the brakes or a switch to disable the trans disconnect so you can work on a grade and hold position.

Aloha MSM, Thanks for the reply but there is only one brake pedal so right now I am using the parking brake so I don't roll back. I could live with the way it is working now, but if I am on an incline and something is very close behind me, I have to use the hand brake so I don't roll backwards before the trans engages.

Maybe my answer is different because it ain't mine that I drive, but drive it w/ both feet and hit the gas before letting off the brake pedal. It aint fun till it's an old Allis Chalmers and it's got the clutch too..... I fortunately I don;t have to drive that one anymore but I was on inclines every now & then, never had any problems with it.

Aloha Don-Wi, If I did that (hit the gas) with my auto trans and released the pressure on the brake pedal, it would lurch forward and probably crash into something. LOL I remember driving a Hyster forklift a long time ago and it had a clutch and torque converter so it was like an automatic.

Hmmm... The Yales at work must be a little different because they only lurch when you first put them in gear.

The Allis was at the last shop I worked at. The mast sank really fast, and it leaked brake and hydraulic fluid all over the shop. That one was a straight clutch/gear transmission w/ a high/low, pull up for high and down for low... They always tended to grind some once in a while....

No tourque converter on that baby....
