I posted on Garden Tractor forum , no responses..I'll try here now..I've got a Gravely repair job dumped in my lap..After much searching model numbers, it turns out to be a model 526 with 8 horse Kohler , swiftomatic , 8 speed..My question is how thick are the clutch linings supposed to be on the forward and reverse..Next , what centers the forward and reverse so it doesn't creep..I have to physically hold the F-N-R lever in a neutral position , otherwise it walks away..I would think there should be centering springs on the cross shaft for the F-N-R to center the clutch..However none are shown on a parts breakdown..Any help will be greatly appreciated..

I don't have an actual measurement for you, but they aren't very thick. I've found that as long as you have clutch lining present, you shouldn't have any problem with them.

There is no Neutral really on the forward reverse cutch. It locks over center in forward.
To keep it in reverse, you have to hold pressure on the handle. Its not supposed to lock into reverse. If it does, there is definitely an adjustment problem.

These are wet friction clutches, so having the proper type and level of oil in the transmission makes a difference also. 30 weight engine oil.

a quick quess, It sounds like your linkage is not adjusted properly. If you go to http://www.oldgravelys.net (you can click it at the end of the message too) you can download the service manual for the machine, as well as for any attachments you have. Also parts list and operator manuals if you need them. The manuals will tell you how to properly check the clutches, and adjust the linkage. The parts list might help you determine if anything is missing.

The person running the site is very knowledgeable with these machines, and will be able to help you greatly also. His email is on the bottom of the page.

Is this the arrangement where one clutch is over one axle and the other clutch is over the other axle ?

Nope... This clutch is directly behind the housing that the mower attaches to..There is a double cone clutch with lining on it that contacts tapered sleeves..I need to know how thick the lining is supposed to be on that front clutch [ forward and reverse ] Thanks..

I've never owned a model 526, but own an assortment of both older and newer models. As far as I can tell, only friction held the neutral position. (i.e., they all creep)You can add a washer to tighten things up, but it only lasts for a few minutes.
Try www.gravelyinfo.com for more information or links to other gravely sites.
