Just bought a '02 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 this fall. It's got 29,000 miles, the 8.1 engine, and the 6-speed manual. Manual shift transfer case. Finally got some winter weather here in MN. I noticed while in 4 HI, when I take my foot off the gas, there is a loud howling noise coming from the transfer case area. Perfectly quiet while accelerating or cruising down the road. Much noisier than what I would consider normal. Is this the nature of the beast? Probably going to take it in next week, but would also like you guys' opinions.

Did you check the oil? I just put a new rear section on my transfer case (01 Duramax). The oil pump wore holes through the case. They aren"t cheap.

my '00 2500 w/6.0 eng. & manual tranny makes a lot of noise like a throw-out bearing going out when I have the clutch in. Been doin it for years. No noticable effects. I assume its made like thAT. Scary at first.

Are the front and rear tires matched? If they are not, you might be getting the noise due to "Windup" tension.
