Just wondering what you guys (and gals) like to use for haying. The wife got another poodle and in exchange I get a tractor to be named later. Right now I have a narrow front Farmall M to run a 24T baler, a dearborn rake and a 25V sickle bar mower. The mower is a back up for a Hesston self propelled windrower that I just got. Do you prefer a wide or narrow front? I know a live pto would be a lot nicer. I'm thinking one day I might get a moco depending on how well the Hesston works out. I'm going to be doing about 40-45 acres of hay.

Well the Allis Chalmers 200 usually does the bailing with a Vermeer 605 F and also the mowing with a Kuhn disc mower. It also loads hay on a Gooseneck trailer pulled by a Chevy 2500HD. Our Allis D-19 is used to unload hay and is mostly as a backup tractor and could fill in if we needed it to. Our raking and teddering jobs go to a 1953 WD-45. Pretty good little tractor for rakin hay and stuff, dosent use much fuel.

I use a Ferguson 35 hitched to a IH 1300 sickle mower to lay the hay down, then a Massey Harris 30 tricycle to pull a 8 wheel Vermeer rake. Then use a Belarus 570 to pull a JD 435 rd baler. Hay loaded on transfer trailer w/ IH M. The trailer is pulled w/1939 AC WC. My wife likes the Massey Harris and does all of the raking. Am lucky for that.
Good Luck..... ..

I use a Jd 4030 or Jd 720 to pull my New Holland 488 Haybine. A Allis D17 series 4 to pull either my New Holland 255 rotary rake or Deere side delivery rake. Jd 4030 pulls the JD 346 baler. And a JD 4020 Powershift pulls the New Holland bale wagon.

Allis WD's are hard to beat for haying tractors on square balers, the hand clutches are a blessing! We cut, rake and bale with WD's.
We mow with a HN 460 series bine and Allis 82S field mower, rake with an old Deerborn and bale with a IH 47.

To run a square baler an Allis Chalmers WD is hard to beat. They are cheap to buy has a hand clutch that runs in oil so it can be slipped some without hurting it also the hand clutch gives it LPTO and there are parts everywhere for them which you probably won't need anyway as they are super dependable.

Massey Ferguson 1100 or JD 2520 diesel either run the JD 710 moco or Reese 10' drum mower or the 335 round baler. Only the 1100 can run the bale wrapper though. Put up about 4-5 cuttings of dry or silage bales on 150 acres.

I prefer a wide front, keeps from running on top of the swath or windrow so much. One tractor I like and haven't seen mentioned below is the Ford 5000 or any of its close cousins (6600,7700,etc.) Also a JD 4020, big enough for a discbine at a good clip and still nimble enough to rake hay.

I use a 1855 oliver on the disc bine, a vac case or 230 farmall on the miller rake, a 1655 oliver on the 336 jd baler & a 1650 & sometines a 1750 olivers to pull the loads. i always tease I don't like to pull hitch pins so I am a little overloaded on tractors.

It all depends, but ussually we cut our hay with our Massey 285, rake with my Oliver 1600 then use the 285 to bale. We used to rake with our 165, but now it's under a loader so it's a little heavier.

Just this last year we stepped up to a Hesston 1014+2 hydra-swing, 14' cut. Previously we used a New Idea 290 9' haybine. We still use that one for swamps, but man is that Hesston sweet.

We bale with a Massey 12 and we have an old wheel rake, but that thing needs a little attention...

The narrow front is nicer for raking hay. You for sure need a live PTO, really hard to bale and mow hay without it.

It's not an antique-yet, but I have a Ford New Holland 3010s-42pto for a New Holland 479 Haybine or 451 sickle mower 9'. Also it runs my one, and only baler New Holland 273. I use a Kubota L2050 for my Sitrex 10' tedder, and my 3pt 2-wheel pin rake. One day I would like to find a mid-70s Deere, or IH in the 70 horse range-diesel-just because.

For the small square baler and rake
the Case IH 585 works well. It gets lots of hours during haying. Jim WJ

1955 Ford 600 model 640 (not big enough but works) with a New Holland 479 Haybine, New Holland 256 rake and New Holland 66 baler (very old). The tractor has enough horse power but not enough weight. Could use more power with the haybine so I hope to have my used New Idea sickle mower working by Spring. Need to replace the homemade metal pitman arm with the proper wooden arm. Seller tells me it will work as is but I don't want to take any chances.

Cutting between 10 and 18 acres depending on the growth and sheep pasture.

hey john s-b, i dont know if this will help but my older brother and i use a 1949 framall h, i can t remember what the haybine is?, a international 430 baler behind the h and sometimes we use my brothers 706 to bale when we get behind on time.(so the h can do other things in the field) i would think a 450diesel would be good or if u want more hp go with the 560 diesel. i hope this helps.

I use a JD 3020(gas), wide front with a MF 12 baler, NI 302 rake and Case 3206 disc mower. The wide front prevents driving over the windrow from the previous round cutting with the disc mower. The disc mower will bog down the 3020 if the hay is real heavy. If I go to a lower gear then the hay has a tendancy to hang up on the bar. Typically, it is only an issue on the 1st cutting but even then it is more irritation than a problem. Good Luck - Clark

For you I would say a Farmall 560 diesel wide front would be perfect. What I use for making bales is an Oliver 1655 gas. Also for cutting hay too. Sucks fuel like you would not believe. I guess for gas and putting through that kind of work is ok. Something with live PTO would be the best. Or a Farmall 706 diesel would also be a good tractor too. Also to get on the Deere side of it. A John Deere 3020 would also be a perfect tractor. Another Oliver would a 1650. I will see if what other guys think about it. Your M and your 24T is not a bad thing either. I baled for many years like that never had a problem sometimes I still use the M and my 24T.
