You might think about a garden tractor, like a JD 140, 112, 110. Easy to work on, and Ebay is swimming in parts for them. You should have a few repair shops close to you that could help. Just my two cents worth.

Perhaps you could find someone who needs one restored but does not have the time/knowhow to do it. Let them supply the tractor and the $$$ for parts and supplies.

I had that same novel idea back in my senior year of high school and it flopped bad. If you want to do this, you gotta have alot of money, for sure. That was my main problem- costs added up fast. Another problem you hit is classmates that dont respect your property. I started off with a fair good running Cockshutt 30, and by half way thru my senoir year, it was so messed with, all I could do is just haul it downtown to have the local Agco dealer patch some things back together. My only other advice to you is if you want to do this, dont do some plain jane tractor like a John Deere B or Ford 8N. Do something off the beaten path, and unique. Family tractors are excellent to do as well. Good luck with whatever you choose

I think that would be a good idea, you may want to go to your local tractor dealerships, and check with local tractor clubs. I had to to a senior exit project also for high school. I Restored a JD 2510 gas tractor. it gave me a great deal of expierence and also helped me decide what i wanted to go to school for. since then, i have graduated from college and am working full time as a service technician at the local JD dealership.

if you want to see the tractor i restored type in "2510G" in the tractor photo's. in it is the tractor and i.

I am located in Tioga County, not that it makes much of a difference in that I'm not the restoration guy, but I had a thought - how about checking with a diesel shop - most of those guys seems to know an awful lot about all of this kind of thing.

Best of luck to ya,

Bill

Jonathan, a tractor restoration is a GREAT idea for a senior project. I'm helping my son rebuild or TO20 Ferguson for a 4H project. These older and smaller tractors are great projects to cut you teeth on mechanical and paint work. The engines and drive train are relatively simple to work on but yet operate under the same concepts as much larger equipment. We are going slow so my son learns what the function of all the components are. It is a very good experience for him and gives me some good quality time with him. As already mentioned, the folks on here will be excellent mentors. Good luck!!

My son restored a 1949 JD B, ( tore down to engine and transmission, refurbished and repainted, replaced exhaust and ignition & generator, reupholstered, and generally fixed up until it looked almost new, and run like new.) ((Some have a more strict definition of restored!)) That was his senior project. When teacher came out to review, she asked if he had spent the required 15 hours -- his response, "Would 500 hours do?" So plan on spending lots of time. He also had over $500 in the project. You should be able to find several restorers in your area who would be glad to give you tips, etc. Just have to look a little bit. Check local parades, festivals, tractor shows for nice looking restored tractors, and talk to the owners. They will probably know restorers in your area. You are wise in looking into this as early as you are, because a project of this magnitude will take a large amount of time. If you can, get a commitment from your school to approve the project before you get started. Some school senior project committees are pretty narrow about what they approve! Unfortunately, they wouldn"t approve son"s project until late in his junior year, (he"d been secretly working on it for some time by then.) Take lots of before, during and after photos. You"ll want the documentation, both for the school project, but also for reassembly, painting and decal placement. Son"s school also required a major research paper, visits to other tractor restorers, and presentation of his project (with a speech) to a panel of adult tractor restorers. And a grading by those on panel. Good luck on your project. You"re in for a lot of learning! Be sure and share your experiences and some photos with us on this board. We love pictures.

Jonathan, We will be able to assist you in the project as "Mentors". I am a University Professor In St. Cloud, MN. I do agree that a person on site would be best. I also think it would be good to have a limited restoration project not a ground up unit to repair. An engine, or clutch job kind of project would be best (especially on a Cub, A,B,or C. JimN

It would help to know where you are...specifics arent necessary but atleast the state. Then someone could direct you to a club or group that might be interested in sponsoring you. Nice to see your planning in advance !!
