Keeping Water out of Transmission

I just discovered that water got into the transmission of the 1755 again. It seems like the oil last about 2 years before it gets milky....this makes for an expensive oil change (~$90) and I would like to try and get some more hours out of the oil. I found these desiccant breathers and am curious if they would keep things nice and dry inside. Anybody ever try these?

I like the Idea of the breather. I also believe that heating the oil with a magnetic external "oil pan" heater, or another method of heating that would bring the trans temp to 110 degrees F or so for 4-5 hours, and doing it on a dry day with low reletive humidity would be a money saver for oil changes. Direct electrical heaters might char oil and make deposits I am not comfortable with. JimN

Even with all seals in good condition,This is a common problem here in Texas and elsewhere. When gear box is hot it pushes vapor out .When it cools a slight vacuum occurs and draws in moisture from outside humidity which then condenses and forms droplets on the inside of the gear case.Happens over and over until there is a noticeable build up of water.

Be aware that when the oil is visibly milky, you have around 10% water in the oil. Way too much!! IH Hytran used to have emulsifier so the water will not show, but will still do it's damage.

I have never heard of a dessicant breather but have used dessicant stored in engines to prevent moisture build up. When ever you unseal the engine you just put the dessicant bags in the oven and heat up to dry them. Sounds like you are getting water through the shifter boots or maybe if you wash the tractor a lot, you are getting water in the vents.

This might sound kind of obvious, but how about the rubber boots around the base of the gearshift lever. Cracked or leaky boots can let water get into the trans around the base of the lever.

Is your tractor alway kept indoors or is it out in the rain sometimes?

Unless the gear shift lever boot is fresh soft rubber that makes a perfect seal on the shift lever, you have a direct path for rain water into the transmission. That is for an open station tractor, not one with a cab.

The shifter boot is in very good condition and seals tight on both the tranny and the stick. I have pressure washed it and have wondered about water getting in the breather, but I typically try stay away from that area. Even our equipment that is shed kept will get gear boxes with milky oil after a few years. Any thing from thing from the disk mower, rake, and brush hog will get water in the oil. Even the stuff I don't wash.

Sounds like you live in an area with high humidity. seems I remember those old Oliver operators manuals saying to replace the trans oil every year. Kind of hard to bring yourself to do that if you don't put a lot of hours on per year.
