I have a massey harris 44 diesel with 2 6volt batteries. Can I replace these with 1 12volt battery and not make any other changes like the generator, starter and so forth.

My Oliver 550 is set up for 2 6 volts in series- I changed over to one 12 volt years ago. Didn't seem to be cranking as fast as it should, so a few years back, I went back to 2 6 volts- and didn't see any difference at all, except my wallet was a little lighter. Am now back to 1 12 volt- just get the biggest CCA you can fit in the battery tray.

In the past, a 6 volt battery had higher cranking amps than a 12 volt battery. That is why a pair of 6 volt batteries were used instead of one 12 volt. Technology has advanced to the point that now a single 12 volt battery will get the job done, but be sure you choose the correct 12 volt battery. Not just any 12 volt battery will get the job done.

As long as the two batteries are wired in series (as opposed to parallel), the net output is 12V so you can safely put a single twelve volt in. This is how I currently have my JD 520.

I would use 2 6 volt in series. That is the way my 706 was set up andI kept it that way.
