I was reading the thread below on scammers, and someone mentioned something about bidder1.

How long has ebay been hiding the bidder? I bought a manual off eBay a couple of weeks ago and didn't notice that. Maybe I wasn't paying attention? I kinda liked seeing who else was bidding on an item. I've crossed paths with many people that way.

Oh well, such is progress.

Brett

I beginning to think ebay is shooting themselves in the foot. I've bought a lot of stuff off ebay in the past few years and it is a great medium for finding something that you don't just quite know where to find everyday and a lot of fun too. It's a great connetor. I've always watched for phony bids and whenever I saw early bids or you got raised by someone with a low number of feedback replies, who hadn't bought anything for a year etc. I just let them have it unless I would be bidding against another known bidder who I fugured was genuine. I also used to stay away from the "private" auctions. I think that by hiding the bidders identity I can no longer make my own assessment of the validity of the auction and I won't be bidding on those- even with all the attempts to make me feel comfortable with the statistics provided. Ebay should just do away with the second chance offers as they're going to loose more with what they are doing. I never took up second chance offers (except on a couple of occasions when the item was damn cheap) just because I never trusted why it might have been necessary to give a second chance (shill bidding?). It just seems that buying on ebay is a little less fun than it used to be and I feel that besides the crooks I am targeted by Ebay a well with all their promotions and constant pressure to use Paypal which really gives you nothing other than your puting all your information out again to someone whom you have no idea how they will use it or where it will end up.

Here what I found recently. Seller was offering "rare" music CD. He had enable "hide bidders." So you can't tell who is bidding. Bid was just getting started at three bids bringing it up to $18. So I entered $19, immediately it jumped to $20. So I entered $21, bidder jumped to $22. So I set my bids to automatically climb until it it hit $40. Imediately out bid to $41. No more bids until closed two hours later. Few minutes later I get "second chance offer" for $40. So seller was faking to be a buyer to see my high end. I did not take the bait. I see he is doing this with other auctions as well.

I won't bid on any auction now that does not show who the buyers are.

Rash of relisting in the past weeks is out sight. I have been following JD and related items. Many have itmes sold way over priced and in couple of days relisted. Is this similar to the tractor auction in Columbia, IN? Most auction have a house bidder on larger items. Even the auctioneer at farm auctions will punch up a tractor to keep it near the wholesale price. Know this for a fact. An old country actioneer one said to me that thier is no bargins a any aution due to the fact the highest buyer was the only fool that will pay that price. My three cents for ebay. OH, buyer always be ware.

e-bay isn't hiding bidders, the seller has to turn that on themselves.

All the auctions I'm watching, participating in or selling have the highest bidder listed just like usual.

This all came about as ebays way to stop fake second chance offers, so they say. An item going over 200.00 will have this. Rather than doing away with second chance offers, and making that know, this is their fix. It really sucks. I hope it cuts into ebay sales, and they change it back. Kyplowboy - If you never buy anything there, I can understand you liking? the way it is now - The info you are talking about was always available - Several times over the years, i've turned in shill bidder action, some 0 or low fb bidder that bids on a certain sellers auctions, all of them, never wins any - Some even have 40 - 50 bid retractions 'cause they went too high. It was nice to know who you were bidding against, like at a REAL auction.

Neither can anybody warn a bidder when the auction description is not right. Example - last week I warned bidders on a solar panel that claimed it was 80 watts, but was eventually changed to "80watt hours per day", but only in the small print. It was only a 25 to 40 watt panel. It will be easier for these sellers to cheat low feed-back bidders who may be a litle green, until after they get conned.

Just went look'n round. Never buy anything on there but look around now and then. I like the way they have changed it. If you go to the 8N I just saw, click on "bidder 10" it will show you his bid history, how much he bid on things from this seller, how offten he bids and so forth. Tells you more about a bidder, even if you can't tell who it is.

Brett, I first noticed it this morning. I don't think much of it. It is a license for shill bidders, that's for sure! I think it will probably cut my ebay buying down a lot.

Doug,
Shill bidding is exactly what I thought of when I seen this regarding my post below.

I figured at the last minute they can withdraw the auction if no one else bids.

Brett,

Roughly a month or so on the "bidder 1". Use to be sellers would opt for 'User ID kept private" option.
