We are looking into buying insurance for our club. I know that a lot of clubs have a blanket policy for events, plow days, shows etc. What does your club use and what should we be looking at. Also would incorporating be a good idea?
Thanks, Byron

Up here in Canada, any tractor club has two basic policies. One is "general liability" and the other is "officer and director liability". Without going into specifics about what is covered under each, let me make it clear that NO INDIVIDUAL CLUB MEMBER IS COVERED BY THE CLUB INSURANCE. The club insurance covers the club for it's negligence and also the officers and directors of the club for the club's negligence. Even the officers and directors are not covered for their own personal negligence. Anyone can sue anyone, anywhere, anytime, for anything and it's almost that simple. They might not be successful but they can sue, no doubt about that. Anybody that takes a piece of equipment to a show or drives someone else's equipment, etc. better have his own liability coverage. That would include throwing away an empty bag of popcorn and hitting someone's kid in the eye. It's just that simple. Check into the EDGETA (Early Days Gas Engine and Tractor Association) insurance that is available through about 100 tractor clubs in the USA.

If your club is a memeber of EDGE&T, you can get insurance thru them. Very reasonable, worth joining EDGE&T.
Just look them on line.

I cant tell ya what insurance provider to use BUTTTTT TT Id sure advise you to get some. The idea of incorporating can also provide at least some degree of isolation for the members as far as liablity for injuries although its NOT perfect. I gave a Seminar once at the John Deere Two Cylinder Expo in Iowa regarding potential liability for tractor clubs n shows but done forgot what all I said by now lol The other individual members of a "club/organization" are not necessarily liable for the actions of say one individual member but, of course, each person is still always liable for their own actions. Bottom line, use care n caution as the very basic general law of Torts is "The Defendant has a duty NOT to expose the Plaintiff to a reasonably forseeable risk of injury."

Take care yall n God Bless

John T
