Do Florida residents get to go to college for free or is this just a myth?. I live in Vermont, and this is just something my mother heard, so I am looking into it. I did a couple searches on Google and I am not finding anything. What she had heard is I would have to move down there and live for 6 months and then I could go for free. Sounds almost too good to be true, but I am looking into it, she said she had also heard of one or two other states that offered the same thing. Anybody live in Florida that can confirm this either way?. Thanks in advance

not achance fo being free have lived here all my 51 years never free but bright futures is about 75% of tuitiont and there are other programs that you can get if you have the grades and want to spend the time looking as for the winter here this year very warm live in northeast fl have not had a freeze yet shore hope we get some colder weather to kill off some weeds and bugs send some from the north

It has been unseasonably warm here this winter, just 2 days ago is was 55 degrees and the lakes are not even froze over and this is the 3rd winter in a row we haven't had to plow snow, but starting last night a cold snap has moved in and is going to stary for awhile. It was 16 degrees out today, which is right where it should be for January and it snowed a little today, which is good because we have had practically no snow, but only enough to turn everything all white.

Here is most likely what your mom was talking about or overheard.

It is lottery funded initative known as FL BRIGHT FUTURES. It is a fairly decent deal and is applied unilaterally. I know of 4 kids going to school on this now.

See link for more information about this program.

You might have heard of the Bright Futures Scholarship program, which is paid for by the Florida Lottery. Essentially students who attend high school there and have good enough grades, can get much of their tuition paid. I've attached a link. One thing to remember; nothing is free, somebody is always going to have to pay for it. Georgia and Tennesee have also set up similar scholarships for residents with good grades.

I'm not sure how this happened, but somehow this post, from me, shows Jonfarmer as the author. Sorry about that... Still scratching my head on this one...

Boat cruised between Lybian coast and carrier gruop bombing Lybia, had to watch for subs and russian made missle boats that wanted to hit back at carier group. Did 20 years, retired couple years back. Frfree college degree though. RN

My daughter went to the community college in Key West for 3 years, established residencey and then finished at the U. Of Miami. Damn near broke me for the last 2 years at Miami. Community college wsn't too bad in Key West but no free rides. That was in the late 80's and early 90's.

Jon, I live in Tennessee, and I'm not aware of any tuition free colleges here. However, I had a friend when I lived in Georgia who had received his PhD from Arizona State University tuition free. I have no idea what their deal is now, but that used to be the case.

You might post this same message over on Tractor Tales. DickL lives in Arizona and would probably know what the situation is there.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

indians in Colorado???. in reply to Jonfarmer, 01-10-2007 11:26:06
Not sure--think there is some thing about San Lewis college in southern Colorado supposed to be free for indians. Like I say--not sure, maybe some thing like this in Florida.

Well yes I have, you see if a white boy goes to a black collage there are lots of white boy money to be had or lets say it wuz. In the last 10 years or so the Mexicans have figger this out and flooded black collages so they have ‘bout cut what spose to be white boy money out. Their were and may still be places were a white boy would be considered a minority . If you are look’in fer more bang fer the buck I would check this out. As has been stated a community collage izz a rite good deal to git the basket weaving and basic English, history, etc subjects out of the way so when you lay down your hard earned money it will go toward the last 2 years of collage that count toward a 4 year degree..

Check for a site to the California University System.
My daughter attended the Hayward campus in something like '89-'92 and tuition was free for residents. She did have to pay for books and fees. Can't say today what they do.

Not in a million years. Lived in FL now 36 years and no one gets anything freee. Some states allow seniors to take courses free after 65 but most charge a modest fee to cover expenses. My frfiend in NC gets to attend Community college for 30 dollars a period for accreditation and free for just sitting in. He does welding and wood turning for free (72) years young

I don't believe our community colleges are free even though you didn't want the credit, I have priced them and they are not badly priced, if I remember right, it is $67 a credit for Vermont residents as of 2006, most courses are 3-4 credits. At 72 is is real important to keep going and stay active rather than just retire and become a vegetable, and it is great he is still willing to keep learning. I got a chance to visit Tampa FL, this summer, it was a great experience and also got to drive up through all the states. I saw lots of retirement communitys down there and I don't think there is any lack of golf courses down there!. You also have alot of different stores and restuarants in the south that we don't have in the North, Like I didn't see a Mobile station, and we don't have a Hess station or any of the southern gas station brands, or a Waffle House, or a Cracker Barrel. It surprised me to see the differences in gas stations and resturants becuase I thought it was about the same everywhere. The heat is also alot different of course, but I didn't think it was unbearable like some folks claimed it was in summer, however I see on the news Florida has been unseasonably hot in the 80's this winter, so I'm sure your sweating!.

Just a myth. I lived in florida from 1995 to 2002 and no free lunch for college students, as a matter of fact tuition and such had risen an lot while I was there.

Yep, tuition is awful expensive for a good university now, and the worst part is, you are not guaranteed a job after you pay out all that money. I'd love some of the money that other college kids have wasted going to college for something they decide they don't want to do afterwards or they start going to school for a year or two, then change their major after taking some of the core courses. I am thinking about trying to pursueing a computer science major myself. They tell you your money is best spent on degrees heavily into math and science, and I like computers.

If it sounds too good to be true, it is!! I am from NE Pennsylvania and they have a far better quality of education there. I have been in central Florida for 20 years. When I came here it was cheaper to live and enjoy. NOW believe me, they are learning all about high cost of living here. The regular colleges charge regular amounts, although I do have to admit the community colleges are pretty reasonable for residents. My boys tution is only about $67.00/credit hour now at the community college.
