Need a little advise.
Went over to the barn last night to get the 656. Had a kid in the neighborhood try 4 wheeling his 4 wheel drive Diesel Ram and sunk it to the front bumper. Figured I needed a larger tractor to suck him out.
When I got there a big old dog came over to me and sat right beside me. Big old dog. He must be at least 120 Lbs. He seemed lost.
I looked around and saw no one. He was friendly so went and put him in the back of the truck. He just jumped right in like he owned the thing and sat down.
Took him to the house and fed him. He seemed starved. He seemed happy and made himself at home.
I called the shelter because there is no tag or collar on him.
They said if they come get him he will have 3 days then be put to sleep.
He is a good old dog, house broke, slept under the 450D in the gargage on an old rug last night with no problems...it's warmer in there.
I have not had a dog in years, but I hate to know he will be put down in 3 days.
I have considered running an add in the paper and putting up a few posters to try and find the owner.
What would you do? He is such a good dog, but I really have no need for one.
Thanks for your input.

Hi , He'd make you a great companion ! Take him to the vet and have him scanned for a chip . We have two of our dogs microchipped and it got one returned to us from 35 miles away . We have 16 dogs ranging from a toy poodle ( Moose ) to a 130lb rottweiler ( Eli ) . The list includes a couple of mutts ( Stinker and Little Pee ) , a dalmation ( Diago ) , three different sizes of shelty ( Messy , Mick and Shelby ) , two huskies ( Kiea and Aspen - she's snow white with ice blue eyes ) , a pembroke welsh corgi ( River - the tailless kind ) , a chocolate lab ( Copper - the dumbest chocolate lab I've ever met ) a cattle style mutt type big dog ( Koby - excellent dog ) and three other dogs that live outside . Yes all the dogs but five live inside , at least at night and when it's cold or hot out . We used to rescue all breeds of animals but here in our neck of the state people look at animals in a different light , if it doesn't make a profit kill it . So we tried to save em all . We got up to twenty dogs and just couldn't afford it any longer . They are leaving us from old age now . The dalmation will probably be next , he's 12 and has a growth on his ribs . We got him because some old hunters were using him as target practice when he was a puppy . My wife ran the hunters off and he's the MOST awesome dog . He's not purebred but close enough . We have a bad story to tell about five or six of the present dogs still alive that we have . We did buy the rottweiler and the corgi . Can you tell we like dogs ? We also have about 15 cats but they stay outside in the mudroom or in the basement and no the dogs don't bother them . We also have 5 horses and one 10 year old chicken that crows ( I didn't know chickens lived this long ! And I spent all my summers on my grandparents egg farm in Georgia as a kid ) and a possum that lives with the cats ( no , the cats don't bother it ) . ...Randy

Read a quote some where that I think of often "some day I hope I am as good a man as my dog thinks I am". This is true, as everyone else has said, put an ad in the paper and if no one is miss'n him your his. I have a lab mix that some one droped. I know he was droped because he lived in the feild down the road from my house for two days, sitting and waiting for a car to come by. I said I did not need another dog till he made his way to my house. I fed him and now I do not know what I would do with out him. He is more protective than my mom was. He will not mess with any one unless I am not around. Did not know he had a mean bone in him till me and a buddy were drink'n in the front yard and started wresel'n around. Buddy pinned me and I let out a holler. Hank left deep marks in his red wings pulling him off me. I have had some GOOD dogs and he is very high up the list. Don't know who didn't need him but I am glad we found each other.

Dave

Maybe somebody already said it but most local papers will run a free found ad for a lost dog. I just did it and put a sign on my mail post. My feeling is if the owner really gives a rip one of those 2 things will bring them runnin. If not he has found a better home!

Ok. Will try and get a picture of him. He is a pretty dog so he has had a good home.
The other half went to feed a friends cows today. She said he went along and was fun to watch. He had to stick his head in every hay bale and check it out. Like he was looking for something.
She had a bunch of square bales on the wagon I put there last week so she would only have to push them off on the ground. She said he had to check between every bale.

You might put up a sign, if someone lost a dog they will be driving around looking for it. I probably think somone dumped the dog. You just found a good friend. We have had several cats show up at our place, but no dogs. Stan

Bill,
To me a dog that you find and "rescue" will be the best and most loyal ever. My dogs are family.

Plus they are the house alarm, coyote chasers, and general all-around guards.

These are my English Mastiffs. Very, very loyal and great guard dogs. Havent got them driving the tractors yet like below, but they do ride the golf cart.

Daisy is on the left (155 lbs) and Flash is sitting (170 lbs.)

Rick

LPlunkett,

Your dog is beautiful. I turned down another mastiff this year. The wife said 2 is enough. By next summer I think I can talk her into one more...

They think they are giant lap dogs in the house.

Well, of course you don't NEED a dog- almost nobody does, unless you work cattle, hunt, or need a "night watchman"- but as the old saying goes, "The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog." The labs are great companions, and it sounds like he's pretty well trained. Best dog we ever had was a neighbor's dog that looked a lot like the one Sloroll posted below, who kept coming to our place because the neighbor hooligan kid's favorite game was "whack the dog with a stick" (I think little Mikey was later voted by his class as "most likely to take a life"). They came and got the dog a couple of times, but finally gave up- mother of hooligan said "Mikey's not ready to take care of a dog yet"- I resisted the urge to tell her that actually, Mikey was not ready to function outside of a reform school setting yet. The dog seemed ever grateful to us for rescuing her from her situation, and is now buried under the lilac bush out by the barn.

Bill,
If you're not going to keep him then send him on down the road right away. Because you will get attached to the old thing pretty quickly and miss him when he goes.
My little Rat Terrier here is a girl named George.
I know she's worthless and weak but she is still all dog and I find myself missing her when I'm gone hunting for even a couple of days.
As others have said, thanks for being kindly to one of man's best friends.

Bill; My dog, Bandy, adopted me last winter. Showed up here one snowy morning. Was very timid and scared till I petted him and has been my buddy since. He enjoyed playing in the snow and trying to catch it from the spout of the blower. After 3 days my neighbor told me where he lived, so I took him home. Nobody there that night, but he seemed to know his way around. Thought that deal was over till he showed up 6 weeks later, still looking for a friend. Took him back home the next day and still no one home. I finally called them later to make sure I was taking him to the right house. The lady told me later they weren't able to give him the attention he needed and were considering finding a new home for him. Gave her my phone number and told her not to call anyone else. The call and the dog came that afternoon and I have had a pretty and smart Australian Shepherd ever since. He is sometimes a pain, but he is good company. His old home is only about a quarter mile from the back of my woods and he shows no interest in going back to his old home... Gene

This is my wife's dog. I was agaist the idea, but she wanted him. He lives in the house (which I am against) and tries to sleep in the bed (which is a cause for lynchin'). However, she was wrapping presents late in the evening last month and finally decided to go to bed. She opened the door to let the dog out to pee and the dog took off like a laser beam. Just 20 feet from the front door, he lit into a dark clothed hooded person hiding behind a poplar tree. Set him alight and sent him packing down the road. I have no idea what this person was doing, but I assure you he was interupted most violently. With the recent rash of break-ins (1 real and 1 attempted), he is more valuable than the double barrel. Even let him on the couch a little more...

Try and find the owner, but keep him with ya. Might turn out better than you think.

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

For doing what you've done so far. You have a big, kind heart.

I have to tell ya, I dont "need" a dog either, but having one sure is good for the soul. Sometimes my dog can make me so mad, but the next moment I am laughing so hard I allmost cant breathe.

I think you have the right idea. Put up a few ads and see what happens. O good newspaper will usually post lost and found ads for free. Also, sometimes the first thing that comes to mind when someone looses a pet is to go to the vet and see if they heard anything.

My dog here is'nt a drop off, but he is a rescue dog.

I think that dog came to you at that place and time for a reason. Maybe you'll find it's owner and they will be happy to find him. The honest thing to do is to place an ad....but beware of scammers...some folks take any dog available. If you like the dog, be very picky about who you give it up to. Make the owner provide you with a photo of the dog. Best of luck whatever transpires....and enjoy your new buddy if in fact he remains yours....how about a photo of the fella?

No photo yet Brian...was just real busy last night. By neighbor says he is a Chocolate Lab, what ever that is. I am used to Beagles.
The other half is going to take one for the shelter and one at the barn where I found him. I want one there in the event he is a kids pet.
The biggest reason has been I travel a good deal and would not be there to care for a pet. That is the big reason I have not had one the past few years. But, since the other half is there now...that excuse kinda goes away.
I just spent 6 weeks in Hungary and if I had a pet that would have not been good.
I just refuse to let the shelter put him down. If we do not find the owner and can find no one who wants him we may keep him.
I just do not like the way Texas treats dogs...but that is another story.
Thanks for your input guys...

Hey Bill---I have a big old Chocolate lab myself...goes around 100lbs. Best darn dog I have ever had. He's my buddy. Best part is I can trust him to be in the house all by himself (well, I have 3 cats that keep him company) all day every day while we are at work and he has never once torn anything up nor made a mess. Worst thing he has done is jump up on our bed and take a snooze. They are a first class companion.

I like what Dennis said. If that dog is as nice as you say then he is a big part of sombodys family and you need to do everthing you can to find them. If you exhoust all hope of finding them you can add him to your family. Dogs offer a kind of unconditonal love that humans gain from.

Keep him. My mom always said that things happen for a reason and it appears that old Buddy will be a great companion for you.

The special ones sometime find their way into your life this way. My daughter's (now ex) boyfriend bought her a Rat Terrier and when she brought it home I was not happy at all. I never liked small dogs and besides, we already have a German Shepherd.

Well, little Gracie has turned out to be one of those special "once in a lifetime" dogs, so you just never know.

At the very minumum, give him a place to stay until his owner claims him or you find him a new home.

What's the worse that can happen? You end up with a great companion?

Scott

I had an old girl wander in here several years ago, same situation as yours. I tried to find the owner and went thru the hoops with the shelter but never found the owner. We've always had 2 or 3 dogs around so another one was no problem and she prefered to live outside anyway. She took a special likeing to the wife and kids. One day a scruffy mean mouthed junk collector came banging on the door when I wasn't there. He started giving my wife a rough time, the dog walked around my wife and made one of the most blood curdling growls she had ever heard and backed the guy back to his truck keeping about 5 feet of distance. We never saw the guy again. So I'm guessing that an appreciative dog would be of great value to have around and a cost effective deterent in this day and age.

What a beautiful shephard. Our 12 year old one died last October and we got another one from the pound three days later. Best dogs there are (IMHO)! Mine looks just like yours but maybe a trifle darker tan.

If your shelter is like the ones around here they will log your call. If the owners are looking for the dog they will eventually call there to see if he was picked up.

Hope it works out for you.

You may not NEED a dog, but i bet you would enjoy having a buddy like that around. It is amazing how lost or abandoned dogs are grateful a home and will really bond with you.

The way it looks, you may not have a need for him, but he sure has a need for you..
If you tell the shelter that you`ll board him til he gets adopted, they should be more than willing to supply the food for him. Then you can do alittle snooping around as to who`s dog it might be. Alot of newspapers run `lost and found` ads for free. Do like you said, and run a `giveaway to good` home ad. Be sure to let prospective owners know that the dog isn`t yours, in case they run into a problem they can`t come back on you. I`m a softy for good old dogs like what you got there. The ones I`ve taken in like that have always been reunited with their owners again, once word gets thru the grapevine. Where I live, it seems like every couple years a dog wanders onto our place. Good luck and enjoy him, you might just end up with a loyal companion.

Make it clear with the shelter thats its not your dog and you are trying to find the owner and may want to bring him in at a later date.

If you take your own dog to the shelter they may charge for it. They do here.

Then take a little time to try to find the owner and if then you don't want to keep him you can take him to the shelter if no owner is found.

The shelter will maybe help in finding the owner also while the dog is at your place.

Just my thoughts. Gary

Well, I have a 100lb mutt and 2 cats right here, one I just had to push off my lap to type this. Real simmilar situations each... I don't have any need for them either. Leave a note at the shelter for anyone to call if they've lost an animal and consider yourself lucky to have a friend. There will be days, I promise, you will "need" him.

Keep him. He'll be good for you. You seem to like him already.

If you dont keep him then take him back and drop him where he was. The owners may be looking for him and he may go home. Better than taking him to be put down. There was a lady around here that found a cat sitting on the side of the street. She picked it up and ran ads in the newspaper and all. the owners called and decribed the cat perfectly. She decided she would drop it off on the way to work the next day and went to the address they gave her. It was the same house that she picked it up from.
