Last week I found a IH 986 and asked for your help in what to look for. Thanks for all the info. I looked at it yesterday and it starts and runs really well. the only problrm I found was that the clutch is hydralic and you have to let off all the way before it goes. Is this a major problem? I drove it on the road in high gear no noise and the hills did not phase it as far as clutch sliping. TA worked good. The guy wants 4750 for it and from what I've looked at this seems like a pretty reasonable price. I can work on it if needed. Any more info would be appreciated. thanks Tim

The clutch may need to be readjusted but even if it needs replaced at that price it wouldn't bother me. With a set of $100 home built splitter stands two people could put a clutch in one of those tractors in one day (with a little practice it's about a 5 hour job) for just a few hundred dollars in parts. The TA's in the non-turbo'd tractors seem to hold up pretty well, our 706 has 12,000 hours on the original TA, our 826 went 11,000 on the original TA and our 1086 has over 10,000 hours on the original TA.

Tim,

The hydraulic assist clutches really do have a "funny" feel to 'em and I have a heck of a time getting used to the darned things.

How in the heck did you swing a $4750 986? Is there something bad wrong with the tractor? That seems awfully cheap to me.

Allan

Thanks for the info Allen. Was a little worried about that. I was just looking at the ads here on this sight and there it was. The guy said he bought it from a farm that was down sizing. It will need some rear tires soon. I figure for the price if I had to do a little work to it that would be ok. It started and ran great no white smoke no leaks very little blowby which I believe is normal for the 6 cylinders. Again thanks for your help Tim

however, I didn't see your post last week. Grew up on one of those tractors, was a great tractor. The TA really is a good thing when running a round baler - pull it down and slow ground movement until you get it started good and tight and then let 'er rip! The only bad thing I have to say is that we did have a few problems with it getting stuck in gear - however, a really long screw driver and a few choice words can take care of that issue. My brother still runs something-86 tractors to this day and still says they are the best tractors for the money. Good luck with it.

Forget the tires. They are a wear item anyway.

Whoooooie! If that tractor is in field condition, you might have well put a gun to his head, as that is just an undeard of price.

Good for you! You are gonna love that tractor! :>)

Dealer in SE Iowa is asking $13000 for an 886. Your deal sounds like a bargain.
