My snowblower died a few days ago I have gas, but no spark put in a new plug and still no spk. I found the magnets on the flywheel pitted and very rusty cleaned up with sandpaper.still no spk. I cann't get the sandpaper under the coil to clean off the rust. The bolts won't come loose on the magnet for me need help. How can I test the coil to know if it is good? Also I cann't hold the flywheel and loosen the nut in order to put a new condenser and points in. The snow to the wood shed is getting deep. Thanks in adv. for all help. Pat

I will bet you sheard the key on the flywheel. If you can wedg a 2x4 under the flywheel to hold it while you loosen the nut its not to bad. You will need a good 3 jaw puller to get the flywheel off. Lube everything good and be pationed. Sometimes a wack with a hammer goes along ways. Just remember that when you put the flywheel back on that it needs to be tourqued to 70 or90 lbs or you will shear that key again.

The easiest, longest lasting way is to simply buy an electronic module, screw it to the housing, attach one wire, and you're back in business. Most autoparts places will have them. When I was a little younger and dumber, I got the nut off but the flywheel wouldn't budge. Took it to a shop and waited. I called and they had stuff on order. Finally, after a couple weeks I went back and found since they couldn't get the flywheel off, they stuck it in the corner hoping I'd forget it. I grabbed it up, went to NAPA and had it running in an hour. Boy was I mad!!

as bob says and everyone else but the first thing i would do is if you cant get that nut off the fly wheel what you might do is get another nut the same size screw it on and make sure your going in the right direction to tighten or loosen dont know much about a engine or what your dealing with but i think i would try to go back with everything original to save problems in the future also you might want to see if you can take it to a shop and have them loosen everything for you it is highly doubtful they will but you never know its probably deffinatley the points just my 2 cents

Aloha, You could do as the others have said or you could invest in a manual impact. It is about 6-8" long and come in two sizes, (3/8" dirive and 1/2" drive (you set the direction and hit the end with a hammer). I would get the 1/2" drive and it costs around $20.00 give or take a few dollars.

how old is the blower it may have electronic ignition if not put it on real easy with yhe coil off sand the magnets to set the clearance on the coil to the flywheel use a buisness card + apiece of paper tighten down the coil then turn the flywheel to get the card out. you do not have too take the flywheel off the wire to the points just cut it off not needed any more
only the kill wire gets hooked up..

Start by disconnecting ALL wires from the engine to any and all killswitches, and see if spark is restored. If so, find the short, and restore the safety functions.

Contrary to what lots of folks think, a little rust on the magnets, or coil poleshoes has NO effect on spark, unless it is built up to the point contact is being made between the magnets and polepieces. The fact that it died all at once is another clue the rust isn't the problem.
An impact wrench is GREAT for getting the flywheel nut loose.

Otherwise, take a length of cotton rope, and thread it down into the spark plug hole, letting the end hang out for removal.

When the piston comes up, the wad of rope will safely stop it's motion, so you can wrench the nut loose.

Is this a Briggs? If so, it may already have Magnetron ignition, and NO points under the flywheel.

If it HAS points, it can be converted to electronic by snapping a module into the coil, and wiring it up, eliminating the need to even pull the flywheel, as the points can be abandoned in place.

OR, you can get a new coil (which Briggs, in their wisdom calls an "armature") with EI built in.

Loosening up that nut is easy if you have an impact, but if you don''t you can still use a poor mans impact which I'm sure you have. By the way your problem is probably bad/dirty points. The poor mans impact is a hammer and a wrench or socket. Put the wrench/socket on the nut, hold the flywheel with your hand then hit the wrench/socket wrench with the hammer. It may take 10 plus hits but it should come loose doing it that way. I've done that probably a few 100 times over the years before I got my compressor and impact gun
