O/T a little, but I thought you guys out in the big square states would be interested to know what the middle-man is getting for the alfalfa you grew.
My sister has a thoroughbred training facility in South Carolina. Saturday morning she called me and told me her regular hay man was having problems and she was almost out of alfalfa. Wanted me to pick up enough to last her until Tuesday or so from a distributor in Camden, a hotbed of the hunter/jumper horsie set.
I went over and talked to them; they had two flavors, some Michigan that was ok, and some 2nd Wisconsin that was a little fresher. Small bales, right at 75 lbs. each. Her yearling trainees are finicky so I got her the Wisc.
I had them load thirty bales, about what my utility trailer wanted to carry, at the tonnage price, $14.44 a bale, $390 a ton.
Good luck, Wm

WOW!!! I just paid $185 a ton for for some 3rd or 4th cutting alfalfa and thought I was getting ripped off. I guess I better take another look at that stuff.

Then go a little further south into Florida, theres some hunter jumper action there too, I've seen the nice green hay that is shipped in, they don't seem to feed much alfalfa where all these shows are, and it is like the speedboat guy complainin about the price of gas. I grew up around the horse scene, kept my distance, but still know what it's like to deal with 40 of them, running out of things like hay and bedding at the wrong time of the year, yep... you will pay the premium or they gots to go, no 2 ways about it. If the almighty dollar is no issue, which is the case with these large equine operations, no sweat, but if yer breakin even and feeding a bunch out of yer paycheck, things can get real tight. We've got a guy in town here that bought a long standing horse farm, few hundred acres, he also bought a whole bunch of additional acreage, some of the best hay land there is, certainly grows nice, just hard to get it in. He also bought a complex that was a lumber yard, hardware store and formerly the main office of a general contractor, the tenant there is a Challenger dealer, and I see all that yellow equipment in the hayfields now, he also got some good green hay in, between all the rain, cut his dry time somehow. Been interesting to watch and am glad to see those fields have stayed out of developers hands, they are grabbing all the old farmland as fast as they can get it. He's doin well with it, nice to see hay down in the fields instead of houses, nice friendly guy too, traits not often seen in that business from what I have noticed on occasion.

And let's see, gas is $2.50, the Tahoo gets 11-12mpg with the trailer, Nebraska is just the other side of East Bamboozle; so our price/ton works up to about the GNP of Belgium? Hope yo' cows is hungry;-) Those little equines you came into lately look to be able to use some good hay, too.
Nice day, innit?
Wm

Horses are a luxury toy and the owners have to pay for it.
