I have a 1010 special that I bought this last summer. Barring the rear wheel slip when plowing, I really like the tractor. I don't like the lack of PS and Live PTO. I am planning on adding weight to the rear if I keep it. Is there anything I can do about the PS and PTO? Would it be better to sell the 1010 and buy something different?

I appreciate all of your different ideas. I just bladed off the driveway with the 1010 before the coming snow and freeze, and I think I will stick it out until something smacks me upside the head that I can't live without. She starts right up everytime and purrs like a kitten. I guess I can get by.

If you want an older Deere in that size range, the 1020 is worlds better than the 1010. New generation engine, choice of live or independent PTO, hi-low or hydrualic reverser, 8 speed transmission -even four in reverse, power-brakes, most have power steering, MUCH better hydraulic system, etc.

Trade for a 5105 Deere with M4WD.

Whoo! The whole idea behind the 1010 Special when it was built was to have a price-competitive tractor for limited applicatons. Its origins go back to the JD 40 in the early 50's.

The power steering could be done relatively easily but the cost would be high. Live PTO would require a later model clutch and who knows what else.

If you need both, you'd probably be better off to buy a different tractor.
