Heres a question that will have you guys laughing...I'm new to JDs and are timing an old 38 D the book says turn the flywheel until the No1 or left cylinder is on the compression stroke.

Q: OK is the No1 cylinder (left) the one closest to the flywheel.....Seems who ever wrote the book expects me to know this....looking at the radiator flywheel is to the right sitting on the seat it's to the left...By all means give me crap but while you at it give me an answer too please.

Regards Todd

This will help you in getting parts too.

The term LH or RH is from the operating position sitting in the seat on most any equipment.

For what it is worth left or right is determined standing behind tractor or implement.

If you also need to know if shes coming up to TDC on the Power/Compression stroke versus the Exhaust Stroke, simply remove the plug and you can feel the pressure building if shes coming up on Compression. If she has the Magneto Ignition as I suspect on some of them (like the direct drive NON reduction gear drive such as Wico C or X Models) it can be timed to snap/fire at either TDC Power or Exhaust cuz those Mags fire at BOTH TDC's.

John more good advice thank you....between these posts and my book I have had it fire twice with a sniff of either but it wont fire a second round and keep running..... I'm now suspect that it's not getting enough gas as I had the carb stripped to clean and now need to reset the idle and mixture jets....Any good tips? turn them right in then out so far is what I think is the recipe.....JUST how far out in say half turns is the next Question I have....

Cheers Todd

Todd; On those mixture screws set the idle one 1 3/4 turns open from lightly closed more or less and the load one at 3/4 to 1 turn out. This is a starting point. I"m not sure on the D which side is what needle screw ? The casting is usually marked though.

Todd, Im pretty decent on the DLTX Carbs used on A n B n H n G etc but Im nottttt t a D man, some used those early funny and/or brass carbs I know nuttin about. Likewise, if its a Wico C or X mag, especially the flange mount, I can help you buttttt ttt mention those Dixie or Edison or Splitdorf Mags and sorry, Im "out to lunch"

HOWEVER if you post these same questions over on the John Deere Board guys like Duane Larson or Glen in Texas and Mike and Frank n others can answer your questions. Im more into electricity.

John T (NOT a D kinda guy, never liked them never will lol)

Thanks Rob I had the mag of so had to get it to spark on the correct side first. Got that sorted and now need to sort the carb....I did get it to fire once but as it has not been running in two years it is palying hard to get I think.....I will advance the spark a little when I try next.
