Saw on the news, ABC I think, about motorcycle guys riding along as an honor guard for our dead veterans on the way to the cemetary. Did anyone see that? I think it is just about the best.

When we buryed my grandson in June of 05 (killed in Irag) there were several motorcycle people present at the funeral and rode alongside the hearsse. Turns out they are Vietnam vets and honor our war heroes at every funeral. They didnt know Larry or any one else in the family, they just wanted to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can remain free.

In Nebraska, we have a situation with a zealot group from Kansas protesting at Iraq war veteran funerals-something about God's judgement over homosexuality causing these deaths. The state passed a law requiring a certain distance for protestors, and now the motorcyclists put up a physical barrier, so the family doesnot even know the protestors are there! Way to go-I say!

Saw the news clip, like the fact that these folk are showing compassion for the fallen and their survivors. Heard recently that the Commander and Chief had not attended even one of the 3000 funeral services.

wd,

Not sure if it's the same thing, but over on the Kountry Life board there's a lady named Hollie, who, along with her husband Ol' Vern participate in The Patriot Guard. She makes lots of posts about the group, and they are very informative.

In case you don't go to Kountry Life and would like to try it, just click on the name at the bottom of the list of related sites over on the left hand side of this site's main page.

Good stuff.

There is a local group of Vietnam vets who ride in front of the procession to the cemetery on their motorcycles. I am not entirely sure of what all they do, but when we buried my brother last month, five of them rode and went to the cemetery and stayed until it was over.

As I understand the process, they protect the family and ceremony from any protesters or other disturbance. The guys who rode in honor of my brother, a Korean war vet, were very nice. Each of them was dressed in leather jackets and motorcyle "gang" type clothing. They all had big motorcycles, mostly Harley's. They were nice, respectful, and it was good to have them there. This was in Austin, Texas.

Didn't see the news cast but I have ridden with them on a few missions. 2 funerals and one Guard unit homecoming. It was probably a group of folks called The Patriot Guard. Lots of good folks trying to do a good thing. I joined it back in the spring, didn't know about them until we had a young man close to here die in Iraq. The Patriot Guard rode at it and kept the demonstrators and protesters from bothering the crowd by standing between them.

The Patriot Guard is more about showing these men and women respect and letting them know they are appreciated than it is about being a wall between the family and protesters but that is a part of it as well.

This is their website, it has alot on the history and information about the group.
www.patriotguard.org. It's a real good group and I am proud to be in it.
