Hi Gang;
This is the tiny coastal inlet & harbour of Porth Clais near St Davids. The hill sides are covered in bracken which has died down. The yellow flowered plants on the right side is Gorse. On the leftside of the river towards the back you can see 2 round stone buildings. These are lime kilns - 100 years ago lime stone was loaded into the open top and a fire burned at the base, this would turn the limestone into lumps of lime which would be crushed and spread onto the fields as a basic fertilizer.
Cheers David

David,

Great picture, as usual. You mentioned Gorse...I seem to remember some reference to that in the Winnie the Pooh books. Is my memory still reliable?

 Bracken in reply to David in Wales, 01-02-2007 11:19:24
Hi Dennis;
Bracken is a large leaved plant which grows very rapidly on poorer soils. It will grow 5 feet high, so dense that its imposible for animals or humans to walk through. It spreads by roots and will cover the hills killing off all other plants.
They can control it by spraying - expensive & hard to do except by planes. On slopes that you can use a tractor they will cut it back by flail or rotary mower. It dies back over winter, then sends up shoots from the earth in spring.
Almost impossible to get rid of. Will try to take a photo of the plant in the spring.
Cheers David

That sounds like that dad gum bambo that grows in NH. Can't get rid of it. It dies down in the winter then grows like mad in the summer and spreads by way of its roots. Gets 10 ft tall and then some. Great picture..

This is a link to Bracken Fern Dennis. It is relatively common here in Australia to but generally does not grow to 5 feet due to higher evaporation rates and lower rainfall.
