Going down tomorrow morning to look at a 1950 John Deere A with powerblock, and has the engine stuck. (newly stuck, had Kroil put in the cylinders last summer to help free it). Front tires are new and rear are about 50%. Missing the front grills. Located in Michigan. Said $1000 or best offer. How much do you think I should offer the seller? Thanks in advance!

Well, I bought it anyway. It turned out to be a 1947 or 48 (no serial plate). I gave the widow of the seller (he passed away suddenly last summer) $650. I didn't try too hard to turn the engine over, so it may not be stuck. ( I haven't loaded it up yet) Found the front grills also. So the tractor is complete (except for the lights and seat cushion). After hearing your replies on the prices of a power block, I don't feel too bad about it. I took about 30 pictures, so if anyone is interested, they can take a look at it. Will bring it home to Midland, MI real soon. Thanks for all the help, you guys are great.

Id get it home, fill up the crankcase and cyls with diesil fuel, or kerosine mix in some oil, and or paint thinner and let it sit for a week or two. Ive made spark plug adapters out of old spark plugs, that I can hook up the air compressor right to the plug holes with an air hose,,, pressurized the cyls for a few hours each,,, We did that to our Super M IH,,, it had went thru a barn fire, and then sat open in a junkyard for a few months before we found it,,,, put in a good hot 12 volt battery and hit the starter. It popped loose after 5 attempts with the starter. it was running an hour later,,,, So maybe you might get lucky and it may not need much at all!!! Was the exhaust pipe covered? Was it inside a shed? Hope this helps,, Chad

You say you are going "down" to look at it in Michigan. Where abouts do you live and what will trucking cost you? The best way to price it is to know what you would have to pay for a complete and running "A". They have sold around here (cent. Mi. from $1500 to $2000. I would leave that one for the parts people. Working on them is gratifying , BUT , ENJOYING them is FUN! It's just an "A: , buy one you can enjoy from the get-go. Don't give a dollar over $500 for this one.

Well lets price it out in parts,

If front wheels are originals in good shape at least $130 for the pair

Carburetor $175

Gas Tank $40 (if good)

Manifold $95 if good

Head if good and crack free $225

Power Block & Pistons once unstuck and if it doesnt need to be bored and no cracks $1200

Tractors carcass alone going to scrap is worth $225

So there you can see you are at $2100 with just naming the potential value of a few of the parts.

$1000 probably isnt bad but always try for less.

I looked it up in my little pricing manual and I have to admit, I am confused. In excellent condition, this tractor rarely auctions for more that 2K, with retailers putting them up for about $3500 (excellent condition). With this in mind the Poor models should be darn near gave away, but the lowest price listed is $750. Maybe it's worth what he is asking. It sounds like you are in for an EOK anyhow, so offer accordingly. Stuck is stuck. Post pics when ya pick it up. You need a before pic to compare with the after. Good Luck,

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

New front tires are worth about $80. 50% rear tires are worth about $100. Engine stuck, missing grills, other unknown items, plus the fact that a 1950 A is a very common tractor. Add it all up and I think the seller has his head in the clouds. $300 should buy it, offer $500 if you really want it.

To me it would be around a $500 tractor. Now if the engine turned over then ya maybe $1000 but with it not running you never know how much or how little it might need to get it up and running. Carbs on the old JD are well known to get water in them and freeze and then brake the carbs and if thats happened it can cost $200-500 for a new/rebuilt one

The power block and pistons alone (if savable) are worth quite a bit,,,, Id go $850 on it if its in real good shape. If it did not have the power block,,,, 500 tops,,,, JMHO, CHad
