Ford 3400 diesel questions

I have a Ford 3400 diesel that has a broken crank shaft. It seperated just in front of #1 rod journal.
Short of taking the engine apart, is there some way to tell what the condition of the upper end of that engine is like ?
I'm half tempted to drop a different crank in it and see if it would run. But I hate to spend the $ on a crank if the rest of it needs rebuilding.
Any ideas?
Thanks
And Happy New Year to all the great folks on this board.

Your going to pull the engine anyway right.
so pull it before you buy another and look to see what damage you have.
If you post pics of the cylinder bores and insides Im sure with all the knowledge on this forum can point you in the right direction.
Good luck.

If you cant spin it over to do a compression check, I dont know of any other reliable method to determine condition.
How was it running before? Did it start easy? Oil comsumption? Smoke?
If you dont know the tractor I'd recommend a teardown.
BTW I have a 3400 in my shop now and all my aftermarket suppliers are out of stock on cranks right now.
Happy New Year to you and yours

JCS, I bought the tractor as is for parts.
Just hate to junk an otherwise good engine if all it needed was a crank.
Just thinking is all.
Probably dangerous I know...
Thanks
