Ok so I have a problem. My WD-9 won't start. Its won't even crank over. We have it on gas to start it, the starter spins fine, but it won't turn over. We took the spark plugs out too, but nothing is making a difference. Every few tries to start it, the starter will freeze up. Please help me figure out what could be going on here and how to fix it. Thank you!

Whitney

sounds like the motor is stuck. i have a super m im working on right now. tractor was parked many years in the barn, ran last time it was parked, but stuck when i got it. i filled the cylinders with pb blaster and let er soak. eventually it broke loose. i had the urge to put some gas in it and fire it up, but figured id be safer to pull the head, drop the pan and pull the pistons. the rings were rusted up bad, good thing i dint start it. if your sleeves look good, you may be able to hone the cylinders and just re-ring it. or you may wind up sleeving it. check the main and rod bearings too while you are in there. also, drop the oil pump and flush it out good, kerosene works well. i'd have the valves checked too, the heads on the diesels did have a cracking problem if they were shut down wrong.it is a little more costly, but in the long run, if you dont check it out first, you may lunch the motor and then be looking at a much larger repair bill.

Your thread is a little difficult to understand, but if the starter is whrilling and the motor is'nt but when it does make contact it locks up it sounds like your starter is in need of a rebuild. If I understand your ? Jim

OKAY WELL MY WIFE DIDN'T EXPLAIN IT RIGHT. WHEN I PULL OUT THE STARTER IT WILL SPIN WITH LOTS OF POWER, BUT WHEN WE PUT IT BACK IN WE GO TO CRANK IT OVER AND IT WILL LOCK ONTO THE FLYWHEEL BUT THE ENGINE WON'T SPIN. IT WILL JUST HIT AND THEN STOP. JUST A CLUNK BUT NO TURN OVER. THANKS, TOM ADAMS

Most certainly that means the engine is stuck and not at all surprising since it's not run in seven years.

Will it start if you pull it or is the engine locked up (selector on diesel and not gas start)?

YES ITS IN GASOLINE START BUT IT WON'T CRANK. ALSO WE TRIED TO PULL IT A LITTLE BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. BUT WE ONLY TRIED FOR ABOUT TEN FEET BECAUSE THE GROUND IS TOO SOFT. I WOULD LIKE TO TRY TO GET IT OUT ON TO THE DRIVE WAY THOUGH. THANKS, TOM ADAMS

Did the engine even turn over when pulling it?

You can direct start on diesel by pulling and forget about the gasoline part, if the engine will turn over, if it is warm enough. Put trans in 5th gear and engage the clutch when moving a short distance. Don't run over the puller.

Sounds to me like the engine is seized. When was the last time the tractor ran?

She's stuck. Give up and tear it down, or sell it. WD-9 engine parts are very hard to find, and also very pricey. For what it will cost to make that tractor run again, you can go out and buy a newer tractor that is ready to go.

Tom make sure when you pull the lever up for gas that the rod that goes through to the carburetor is moving. They can sheer a pin. Jim

Tom just watch it when you move the lever you will see. Also if you think it might be locked up put it in 5th gear, might need a little help, and get ahold of the tires and rock it back and forth, if it's kocked you will know right away.Jim

Also Tom was it stored inside? If so it might not be stuck too bad. Fix you up a 50/50 blend of automatic transmission fluid and brake fluid, pour about a cup or so in each cylinder through the spark plug holes and wait a few days, rock it again, if it doesn't work just wait a little longer. Oh and by the way, if your wife is helping you, you're already have fun, just don't get excited, when it's all over it'll be fun too look back on and laugh. Jim
