Engine swap question

If I DO, decide to buy this 4020 gasser with the POSSIBLE BLOWN head gasket. How hard would it be to change it over to a diesel engine?
I mean, I would REALLY rather have a diesel, but form an economic stand point I might need to just bite the bullet and buy this gasser for $3900.00 instead of the diesel for $8500.00 and convert the gas to diesel a year from now if it isn't difficult.
Is this a difficult thing to do?

I'd look into the cost of the replacement engine. I find it hard to believe that you could buy a $4K 4020 and convert it to a diesel for less than the $8K diesel was to start with. Salvage yards are probably asking 3 grand or better for just the engine. It's probably an easy job to do, but I'm a bit skeptical on the money side of it.

I don't think 8 grand for the swap, I think that with your gasser AND the engine swap, you'd be over the 8 grand you say it takes to buy a diesel to start with. If 4020 diesel engines are getting rare as another poster stated, salvage yards aren't going to give them away. Knowing nothing of JD equipment, I'd think that it'd take over 4 grand to do the swap. Could be wrong.

I have heard of many haveing been changed and I don't think they had too much trouble. I think if you want a diesel then look for one now. Engines may be getting hard to find in the good and cheap catagory. So buying one allready set up may be cheaper right now, plus you can dyno the engine if it is in a running tractor before you buy it. The New Generation of tractors is gaining in collections and that may be another factor as not to bucther one up. If you require a loader and the gas tractor has a good one I'd buy the whole package now and run it and maybe do some work on it and then if you find you want a diesel then keep that loader and sell the gas tractor and buy a diesel. You might just make some money on that gas tractor as a few years back (15 ?) we paid around $5,500 for ours and really haven't seen any for sale in our area since. I wanted a gasser as I mostly did alot of starting and stopping and running around in all kinda weather so a diesel 24V was not very appealing to me.

Spending some time on the JDparts website comparing the gas and diesel will probably give you a good idea on what is needed. These kind of projects always seem to snowball on me.
