Got a guy wanting me to do some maintainence on a tractor of his just wondering what most are paying for this kind of service? I always do my own work and service my own equipment so I don't really know what to charge him. Thanks for any responses, Brian.

The plant down the road pays mechanics $42.00 per hour plus benefits. And the plant is taxes, overhead, tools, utilities, office overhead, etc.

If you're doing it because you like working on tractors , it's not your main source of income or you know the guy then it'll be lower than if you are a shop owner . If all you're bringing into it is some basic tools and your knowledge it'll be lower ( don't take that wrong those are both important ) but if you have to do any major work that requires buying additional or specialized tools ( or shop supplies ) then you need to give him an as per quote beforehand so you two can work it out . I'd ask for about half of the going rate of the dealers shops in the area . I don't work on others equipment so if I have to pay more than half I might as well go to the dealer and get some assurance that it'll be done right and in a timely manner . Remember that trust goes both ways when it comes to handing over hard earned cash . My cents worth ...Randy

Brian, we need more info to help you. It really depends on "how" you know this man. Is he a neighbor? Do you have other transactions with him? Is he an old-timer in bad health that lives next door? Then maybe $15 hour If he is an over-paid city slicker big shot horse raiser that comes to look at his "farm" on the week end? Then maybe $50 hour

Tom

We charge $65.00 in our shop and never have a lack of work. This is in a lawn mower shop in a city of 100,000. Most ag shop around here are in the $65-75.00 range. I would not charge less than $40.00 per hour, he not only has to pay you for your time, but you have tools, and knowledge that someone has to pay for, it is not free, and you did not get the knowledge for free, it cost you somewhere to learn it. Make sure he can pay the bill, I always am a little cautious about this kind fo thing unless it is someone you know and trust.

I run a repair shop on the side and I get $25/hour on ag tractors and equipment, and $40/hour for most industrial and commercial trucks. I'm the cheapest around most guys get $35-$70/hour for the same thing.

I always ask myself "does the guy want me to do it because he is unable for some reason , OR , does he want me to do it because he is too busy or going on a trip or doesn't want to get dirty or he figures I'm so cheap that he can't afford to do it himself. I have dealt with a lot of people who fall into the latter catagory and I will soak it right to them. If he falls into the first catagory then you need to ask yourself "will I ever need HIS services for anything"? If so, trade or charge him what you would have to pay him. If not , charge 50% of prevailing shop rate in your area. (you probably don't have their overhead).

When I work on others stuff I get $20.00/hr cash. Unless you are a professional with a shop I don't know how you could ask for more. Around here they wouldn't pay $35.00.

Brian, since your in the same state I'll give you a few ideas of the shops close by me. Theres a JD dealer in Tipton that for farm calls charges $1.25 per mile for the drive and $67 per hour. The another shop close charges $75 per hour for sop rate and that doesn't include hauling if they have to hual a tractor in. My self if I work out I charge $15-20 for the drive to the place depending on how far I drive and then $35 per hour. I don't get rich that way but I also not hurting the person with that rate since its about half what the big guys get

All depends on what all yoru doing, sandblasting, fitler changes or major engine work. Also, if you dont charge for shop supplies hourly should go up a bit. remember ysomoens got to go wash yoru rags pick up brake clean etc. Also, depends on if you charge for every minute, chances are your hourly will go down.I dont run a shop for full time income but when I charge usaully i say "i spent aobut 5 hours doing that and just use a round nubmer 250 bucks. I dont count every minute, reading manuals time pondering, wire wheeling bolts etc not saying one shouldnt jsut i dont
