Everyone,

Just wondered what there is to know about using a single bottom 3-pt plow. I am considering
buying one to do our garden plot. Until now we
have simply used a rototiller, but now I am interested in going a little bigger with the plot and applying manure or green fertilizers. I intend to use one of my two Ford NAA tractors to do the work. I noticed a single bottom plow for a class I hitch is available from TSC for 470.00. Do you think this would give me enough years of use in a small garden plot application?
Since I do not have a disc, I plan to break up the
plowed area with the lowered tines of my box blade (which has worked in other applications)
Then, go over it with my rear tine rototiller.
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Tim, Ohio

I have a 3 point 2 bottom plow, and a 2 point pull plow. I think my pull plow does a better job than the 3 point. My pull plow and my discs were bought bymy grandpa in the 40"s. They still work as good as new and have held up in the weather. I would consider a pull plow, once you figure out how to use them, they will become your best friend. Thats all I use for my garden.

The plow will work but with out a disc you will still end up useing the tiller. A 3 point tiller will not owrk well on an NAA because ground speed is to fast with an NAA. Also for that price if you start watching auctions you should be able to find a 3 point plow, even if 2 bottm that would be a lot cheaper and a disc and have less tied up in both then what you would pay for that single bottom plow. I know in my ara you can pick up a good used plow for $50-250 and a disce for about the same and then you would have what you need. Shoot if done right a dise would do all you need for a garden if you worked it over real good and had enough weight on the disc.

I"ve used a single bottom for a garden or three, didn"t really like it, too large of furrow(16"- no surprise), used a 12" one bottom- not much better. I currently use a Ferguson fixed two bottom, way better, and just bought a Ford trip two bottom. Agree with Tom, should be able to find a good set of two bottom plows for a lot less than $470. Your tractor should handle it okay. Don"t worry if it isn"t "show-room" new, it"s not like you are plowing 200 acres with it.

good info in the archives about this

if you have rocks or roots, you will find out how well made the TSC plow is

good old American built plow was the way I went, took 2nd share off to break the sod the first year, bot used set of 3pt discs, very pleased with the setup

rototiller can over-pulverize soil if used to excess

It would work fine. If you were closer to Missouri, I would sell you my JD 2 bottom plow for less than that.
