My dad and I are going to restore my brothers b in his memory. He passed on the 8th. I know it is a 39 or 40 because it is a slant dash, but how can I find out exactly what year it is, and is there a way to get the serial number since it is missing.

Ooops, didn't notice you said the serial # was missing. Sometimes I read too fast and don't let it soak in. Sorry 'bout that!

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's been awhile since I had my nose buried in a B parts book, but I think the 39's had the cast guard around the brake drums as did the unstyled B's. I don't beleive the later ones had that style brake. Not much you can do to get the serial number if its missing the tag.

The serial number tag is on the right side of the main case, in front of the belt pulley and below the magneto. If you post the number, I can look in a reference book I have and tell you the year.

Post this on the John Deere site. There is some fellers on there that can tell you how to get close to the year. They got ways of knowing things like this, I think it is a gift from God. Hope your Holidays are good. God Bless

No way to figure out more without that tag.
