Just wondering if I should send the truck yet for the tractor?

Do I need to get paint also?

Or is it painted already?

Gary

Distember in horses is usually left alone to run it's course. You need to monitor the fever though and use antibiotics only if they start to have problems breathing or the temp gets to high. But if you start antibiotics keep up with it and do a full regimen, otherwise it comes back worse than ever. When you are around them you need to totally disinfect you clothes footwear and gloves etc after you handle them or are around their pen. they should be quarantined, so it doesn't get spread. Once it is there it is there.

Hi Gary,

This hasn't been a good day. :>(

Got one step on your tractor and the rest of the day was spent with this mini-batch of sick horses. Just got home.

Vet just called and said one of the little throw-backs has distemper. Now, I gotta disinfect the darned trailer. Boy! Am I glad I didn't haul those jokers out to the farm!

Yeah,

Vet said we had caught it early enough and they are gonna shoot 'em twice a day with penicillin and feed 'em a ration of oral antibiotics in their feed. Says they’ll be ready to come home on Friday.

Trouble with that damned distemper, it will live in the ground just like black leg and I don't wanna be hauling it home, so I’m gonna make the Vet keep the critters for at least another week minimum.

That's what happens with these horses running wild up there in that country. Nobody tends to 'em.

Allan

Allen,
Don't want to but in to your business, but I would leave them colts ina quarantine for at least 14 days or more if possible. It takes 7 days alone to incubate the bacteria. I would give them 21 days myself. Don't want to contradict what your vet says, but I have had experience in this. Not giving veterinary advice, just neighborly advice.

Hey!

I appreciate the help and thanks for your input.

I knew we shouldn't have even considered takin' 'em in; next time, I'll make sure Mother doesn't get the call.

She's like I am on old tractors; wants to save 'em all. :>)

Can't say I've ever heard of black leg. Distemper happens, but we haven't bought any heifers or milk cows in years and haven't had it that I can ever recall. I think I may have been 5 the last time we bought any to add to our heard. Keep the breeder guy coming and we have a few "mother" families of holstiens now, I think 5 prevailent ones, mostly stemming back to maybe 3 that my mom bought way way back (or even ones Grandpa bought even farther back) that have good characteristics. Grandpa used to be a dealer of sorts and mom was his side kick, so they knew what to look for.

The buyers always like to buy from us too, say we have the easiest to handle and load they've ever dealt with. Then my mom laughed and said those were the mean ones and that's why were were selling those 3 or 4!!
