I am looking into the purchase of a 1981 International 1800 dump truck. It has a Detroit diesel motor and 5 speed manual transmission. I would appreciate any opinions on this truck. Maybe a price range that I should try to budget for. The dump and cab seem to have little or no rust on them. The dump works but cylinder leaks small amount. Is there a website that I can find parts and prices for International trucks?

I picked up a single axle IH from the Highway Dept. Hydraulics front and rear for $3500. Everything on it works great.

You could look up IH trucks on ebay and get an idea of what they are asking/bringing there. I've got a '81 1700 series truck and like it. I've got the IH 9.0L engine, but wished it had the detroit. As far as parts go, you will have to find the closest Navastar truck dealer for most parts. I get most of mine from Wichita KS. If you get the truck, the first thing you need to get for it is a line setting ticket for it. Your local Navastar dealer can help you with that. This will tell you everything you need to know about your truck. Good luck.

If everything else is good, I would say that his asking price is reasonable.

If you dont mind me asking, will you tell me what you paid for your 1700 if you bought it used? The one that I am looking at needs rear wheels cylinders and cab mounts. The guy wants $3000 for the truck and Im not sure is that is good. I do know that I have been watching little 1 tons go for way more than this that are not diesel. Who makes the transmissions in the International 1800 trucks? I think the truck might be a S1800 not sure what International made then.

International made S series trucks in 1600, 1700, and 1800 model trucks. I bought a single axle 1985 S-1600 with a 7.3 automatic and only 85,000 mile on it for $3300. Dump trucks are cheap right now in the michigan ohio indiana area as work is short. The 5 spd trans missions were Spicer or Fuller according to my body builder book. Take a careful look at tires and the springs these can be worth more than the truck.

Leaf springs. I missed it on mine but it had been overloaded many times and the springs were bent. Cost me $800 for new springs. It was Ok because I bought the truck for the right money but on a tandem you are looking at a lot morey money.
