Hey all Merry Christmas! Hope everyone got those good gifts this year. I have some questions for the experts on here. Im looking at a 2001 Chevy Silverado 3500 ext cab 4 door dually 4x4 duramax/allison auto. Was wondering what everyone thought about these trucks and how good that motor is. I heard the earlier duramaxs had some problems is this true? Also what is the best performance chip to add some hauling power? Thanks everyone and have a safe holiday with your families and loved ones.
Matt

I have a 2003 Duramax 6 speed. Great motor plenty of power and torque. I have had no trouble with the truck except the radio died and was replaced on warrenty. The only trouble GM has had with the Duramax is the Bosch injectors. On the 2001-2004 the injector seals or injector bodys can fail allowing fuel into the crankcase. The injectors are under the valve covers on these early engines so it takes a lot of labor to replace them and costs around $4500 for a dealer to do it. Good thing is that GM has extended the warrenty on the fuel system to 7 years or 200000 miles on the 2001 to 2004 trucks. With a Durmax there is no need to chip them, it just wastes fuel and can cause engine damage. I pull a 25 ft, flatbed and 20 ft. stock trailer all the time with no trouble and I average 17 to 18 MPG loaded. Great truck, you will not be disappointed!

I'm certainly happy about that extended warranty on the fuel injectors. My 2002 GMC Duramax (85K mi) got hard to start and GM put a new set in for me last week. It starts good now! I hope to experience some of that great fuel economy others brag about. Otherwise, I just love that truck!!

I dont own one but one of my customers has one and I've driven it quite a bit (probably 15,000 miles). Awesome truck, and I'm Mopar through and through. No chip on it, doesnt need it. From what I've seen all a chip would do to it is make more smoke (waste fuel) and add upper cylinder heat and stress. He melted a couple of other brand trucks chipping them up and pulling the guts out of them with a 6 horse slant trailer with living quarters. I've never driven it with that rig on it but have with a 24+5 dual tandem trailer. It 'walks the dog' with 20,000 on the trailer, just feels and handles that load better than my Dodge pulling that trailer empty. Empty the ride is light years ahead of mine, plus its quiet in the cab, dont have to listen to all that banging around under the hood.
